EXECUTIVE SPEAKER FORUM

2023 ESF – A Slam Dunk!

By Stephen Beriau, Eclipse Business Capital, Co-Chair, Executive Speaker Forum Committee

Celebrating our 15th annual Premier Event, TMA Chicago welcomed 593 members and friends, leading to our largest attendance since the event’s inception. With many individuals joining from our sister TMA Chapters, this event is creating interest rivaling only that of national conferences.

Our guest, Coach Mike Krzyzewski, was our first athletics and coaching speaker and his presentation was well received. His leadership skills and ability to reach individuals performing at Olympic levels provided good lessons for members to use in our own organizations. A special thanks to Justin Bernbrock as moderator.

We’d also like to thank our sponsors for your generosity, without your help, this exceptional event would not have been possible. Below is a video link highlighting the remarkable evening. We encourage you to share your experience on your social media pages.

2024 planning is already underway, and we look forward to having you join us again. Any individuals interested in joining the committee can reach out to Tina Hughes, Gordy Gouveia, Stephen Beriau, or the chapter office.

Thank you again for your support.

CHAPTER LEADERSHIP MUSINGS

Handing over the Reins

Kat Parker, Chapter President

HYPERAMS, LLC

I joined the TMA Chicago/Midwest Chapter 13 years ago and have had the opportunity to be a part of the Chapter as it adapted through the changing times. Over the years we have navigated the changing markets, COVID-19 pandemic, transition of our Glatz team and so much more. We set goals this year; to be the largest ESF, increase sponsorships, grow golf attendance, increase membership and expand on Milwaukee events. Each new year brings new challenges for the Chapter that we continue to face head on and overcome.

This year was no exception... Continue...

Passing the Torch to 2024 Leaders

Tina Hughes, CTP, Vice President, Communications

High Ridge Partners, LLC

The 15th Annual Executive Speaker Forum, held on November 16th, marked a milestone as one of the most well-attended events in the history of our chapter. Mike Krzyzewski, affectionately known as "Coach K," the revered head coach of Duke University's men's basketball program, delivered a dynamic and inspiring keynote address. ...

Coach K's insights went beyond the basketball court, delving into the challenges of managing egos to foster team dynamics. He candidly discussed navigating setbacks, emphasizing the importance of resilience in bouncing back after losses to secure future victories. Equally significant was his discourse on the intricate process of leadership transition, a critical aspect of sustaining organizational success. He stressed the need for leaders to empower the next generation, acknowledging the difficulty inherent in relinquishing control after years of steadfast responsibility.

The upcoming year brings exciting changes as the TMA introduces the 2024 slate of officers, directors, and co-chairs. The 2023 leadership team is actively facilitating a seamless transition, passing the torch to capable individuals who will steer the organization forward.

Lunch on the Lake: Milwaukee Goes to Madison

By Virginia George and Erin West, MKE Planning Committee Co-Chairs

OCT 17 — Milwaukee planning committee hosted a membership networking luncheon at the Edgewater Hotel in Madison Wisconsin. Milwaukee planning committee co-chairs Erin West and Virginia George welcomed members for a delectable luncheon and members had time to interact with over 20 members, mostly from the Madison metro area.  New members were encouraged to attend and several potential new members recently relocating to the Madison area from other states did attend and enjoyed the opportunity to connect with the TMA in Madison.

The venue had a beautiful view overlooking lake Mendota and several tables were boisterous and obviously enjoying the conversations.  We look forward to gathering in Madison at least annually and hopefully next summer, back on the square for the symphony.

September 21: Milwaukee Education Event

By Erin West, Godfrey & Kahn, S.C.

The Education Committee and Milwaukee Planning Committee joined forces to host a lively panel discussion on Valuation in Insolvency at the Milwaukee office of Godfrey & Kahn. The panelists included experts on business valuation and appraisal who discussed the methodologies and best practices in working with valuation experts. The panel was rounded out by restructuring advisors, a banker, and an attorney who discussed the strategy and uses for valuation opinions throughout an insolvency process and from all angles. The panel discussion fueled some thoughtful questions and comments from the audience including on the increasing impact of AI in valuations. Attendees enjoyed networking on the rooftop patio post-panel.

October 19: A Hole in One Win for NextGen

By Dan Osterhaut, Revelation Machinery

The TMA NextGen group held its golf event at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park. We had to be expected Chicago Fall weather with plenty of clouds and falling leaves.

There was a great turnout with 32 golfers attending the event which first started with a luncheon followed by a round on the beautiful course. While the course was challenging, there were a few golfers who posted great scores!

After the round, we retreated back to the club's sports bar and Exmoor gave a curling training session to the group in their ice rink. It was the first time most of the group had tried curling before! The golf event turned into a two-sport adventure!

November 29: NextGen Jingles and Mingles

By Jake Sklena, First Merchants Bank

This year NextGen’s annual holiday party was held at the Berkshire Room’s Bodega Lounge. The planning committee was incredibly pleased with the turnout, with the highest attendance in over 5 years. We had 57 registrations – with representation from 38 firms – and were pleased to see a number of new faces. Hot appetizers were provided by the venue to go along with happy hour cocktails as NextGen kicked off the holiday season.

Special thanks to John Williams (Gibraltar Business Capital), Samantha Ruben (Denton’s), and as always, Katlyn Weiler (Glatz Management), for all the help in finding a suitable venue and coordinating the event. With young professionals representing a variety of industry-leading firms, we look forward to seeing both familiar and new attendees in the years to come.

HOT TAKES
Market Insights, Musings and Trends

"WeWork isn’t working. WeWork’s chapter 11 filing further illustrates the false promise of 'tech,' companies disrupting traditional industries. At bottom, WeWork is a sub-landlord whose business model was troubled before the pandemic, and has only worsened since then."

Jack O’Connor, Levenfeld Pearlstein LLC

"Credit fundamentals remain surprisingly healthy, but warning signs are flashing and restructuring activity is increasing."

Matt Tjaden, Accordion

"Did the Cubs overpay for Craig Counsell? Baseball and statistics go together. The Brewers won more games than expected over 7 seasons while the Cubs underperformed to their statistical expectations in 2023. Let’s hope he can bring the positive trend to Chicago next year. Go Cubs!"

Tina Hughes, CTP, High Ridge Partners

"With high interest rates and valuations coming in lower than anticipated, distressed commercial real estate solutions continue to focus on creativity and speed."

Mark. A. Silverman, Locke Lord LLP

TMA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION NEWS

Scholarship Recipients: Where Are They Now?

The TMA Memorial Scholarship Foundation's "Where Are They Now?" campaign began by following up with past scholarship recipients. We checked in with these bright winners to see where they are in their journey.

Since 2007, the TMA Memorial Scholarship Foundation has awarded 3 to 5 scholarships of $2000 or $3000 each. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a dependent or relative of a current member of the TMA Chicago/Midwest or a former member who has either retired, become disabled or passed. Applicants must complete a full application package including transcripts, an essay and teacher recommendations.

KENZIE QUIRK ('26)

School and Major: I currently attend DePaul University in Chicago as a neuroscience major and an applied psychology minor.

Campus Life: I love everything about DePaul, but my favorite thing has to be the large outside sitting area we call "The Quad". When the weather permits, The Quad becomes a beautiful place where all DePaul students will hang out and sometimes families will walk their adorable dogs through the park and we get to pet them!

My favorite place to study on campus is the library! The library has beautiful stained glass and a great view of The Quad that makes studying for multiple hours on end a little more bearable

TMA Scholarship: Winning this scholarship allowed me to focus on my studies instead of worrying about the cost of my education. I was able to finish my first semester at DePaul with 4.0 because of this.

ELI KONOPINSKI ('24)

School and Major: I currently attend University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. My major is Computer Engineering, and I haven’t changed it since freshman year.

Campus Life: My favorite thing about the campus is the Einstein Bros Bagels inside the Computer Science building.

I am most proud of the projects that I made in a class called Digital Systems Laboratory. One in particular, we made a SLC-3 processor that could run simple 16-bit assembly code using SystemVerilog.

Grad Plans: My plan after graduation is to hop straight into work.

MIA WIKEL ('26)

School and Major: I am currently attending the University of Maryland - College Park and majoring in biochemistry.

Campus Life: My favorite thing about the campus is Mckeldin Mall. It’s a beautiful courtyard area where I love to sit and hang with friends. At the top of the mall is Mckeldin Library which is one of my favorite places to study. Outside of the library is a statue of our mascot, Testudo, and students rub his nose for good luck on exams.

TMA Scholarship: Winning this scholarship helped me pay for my textbooks and other materials for class and helped me focus on academics rather than money and paying for school.
