A Couple Is More Than Two People: Foundations of Systems Therapy

In this course, we will look at the dynamics behind the dynamics that couples bring to therapy. We will explore how subtle relationship patterns from the couples’ family of origin insert themselves into the lives of the couple and shape their interaction. These patterns include intergenerational patterns as well as present-day influences on the couple.

Therapeutic Interventions That Facilitate Working With Couples

In this five week seminar, we address approaches that work best as a function of the idiosyncratic qualities of every couple that we see clinically. Our seminar includes initial discussion approaches; the importance of diagnostic understanding of the couple as a unit and the individuals that make up the couple; the application of Object Relations and other approaches; the use of dreams and phantasy material; how to decide when to work with the couple and when to focus on the individuals that comprise the couple; as well as dealing with our own comfort in using our experiences in session.

Trauma-Impacted Couples: Attachment, Escalation, and Repair in Clinical Practice

This is an advanced clinical training that provides a trauma-informed framework for understanding and treating complex dynamics. Participants will learn how trauma reshapes attachment, emotional regulation, nervous system functioning, and relational meaning-making, causing present-day interactions to be experienced through the lens of past pain.

Integrating Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Internal Family Systems (IFS), this six-module course equips clinicians with practical strategies for assessment, de-escalation, attachment-based interventions, working with protective parts, and facilitating repair without retraumatization.

Emotional Unavailability & Unrequited Love: On Mourning The Couple That Never Was

Some relationships never officially begin or have the opportunity to unfold, yet leave us

grieving as though they had. What makes certain impossible relationships so difficult to

relinquish? This course examines the psychology of emotional unavailability and unrequited love through multiple theoretical lenses, exploring what these relationships come to represent, what is truly being mourned, and how clinicians can help facilitate healing, growth, and transformation.

Our House Is On Fire”: A Multiple Systems Approach To Couple Therapy In A Time of Climate Breakdown and Sociopolitical Uncertainties

As we find ourselves mired in multiple layers of uncertainty and alarm, including the unfolding climate and ecological crisis, ongoing sociopolitical harm and emergent political upheaval, how do we as couple therapists work with these realities as they emerge in the clinical landscape? In this workshop, a multiple-systems framework will be applied to consider complexities from various viewpoints, drawing on psychodynamic and systemic understandings to foster more productive communication, repair ruptures and embrace multiple viewpoints in our couples work. The workshop will include case examples and small and large group discussion.

Understanding and Working With The Invisible Toll of Race In Couples

The issue of race is very much in the therapy room, even when it goes unspoken. It quietly affects communication, conflicts, connection, and emotional safety that a couple experiences. As clinicians we can help the couple recognize when ruptures, defensiveness, and misunderstandings are rooted in their partner’s racial identity, lived experiences, and systemic stressors. Through case vignettes, education, and discussion, clinicians will recognize the role and toll of race in and on a couple; how to engage couples in conversations about race without creating rupture; and how to navigate their own biases and countertransference when working with racially diverse couples.
