NES Awarded Grant to Launch KIBO Coding Club
Narragansett Elementary is thrilled to announce that Vanessa Miller has been awarded a 2025 MassCUE Classroom Grant to create the KIBO Coding Club, a hands-on robotics and coding program for young learners.
Using KIBO, a screen-free coding robot developed at Tufts University, students will build, program, and decorate their own robots while learning fundamental coding concepts like sequencing, loops, and conditional statements. Through hands-on activities, they’ll program KIBO to move, make sounds, and interact with its environment using sensors.
The club will also integrate arts and storytelling, making STEM learning fun and engaging. This exciting opportunity will spark curiosity and empower students to become future innovators in a technology-driven world. Stay tuned for updates!

Updates from Narragansett Prevention & Wellness
With recreational marijuana now legal in RI and nearby states, it’s important to remember that it’s only legal for those 21 and older. Today’s marijuana contains much higher THC levels (20–40% vs. 4% in the '90s), posing serious risks to adolescent brain development and mental health. Assuming teens are using the same marijuana as past generations is dangerous.
Learn more about the science behind modern marijuana and its impact on young brains by clicking HERE for the video by Laura Stack of Johnny’s Ambassadors through Operation Parent.

Nurse Updates: March into Wellness!
As the seasons change, spring brings renewed energy and a fresh focus on health and wellness! This month is National Nutrition Month, a great time to encourage healthy eating habits that fuel both body and mind. A balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein supports learning, concentration, and overall well-being. Staying hydrated is just as important. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps maintain energy levels, improves focus, and keeps the body functioning at its best. Encourage your child to carry a reusable water bottle to school and choose water over sugary drinks whenever possible!
With seasonal changes, we also remind families to stay mindful of lingering colds, flu, and
allergies. Regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and keeping students' home
when they are feeling unwell all contribute to a healthier school community. Additionally, please
remember to send any updated physical exams and immunization records to your school nurse.
If you have any health-related questions or concerns, feel free to reach out. Wishing everyone a
happy, healthy, Spring season ahead!

Grupo Ondas Brings Capoeira to Grades 7 & 8
Last week, we welcomed Grupo Ondas Capoeira to Narragansett School System! Instructors from Grupo Ondas Capoeira, based in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, presented an engaging and interactive program for our 7th and 8th-grade students.
Capoeira, a dynamic art form blending movement, music, and philosophy, provided students with a unique cultural experience. They participated in the Jogo de Capoeira, the "game of capoeira," where they exchanged symbolic movements of attack and defense while following the art’s traditional etiquette.
This enriching experience was made possible through our valued partnership with FirstWorks, which continues to bring inspiring and educational opportunities to our students.
We are grateful for the chance to explore the energy and history of Capoeira!
