Greetings!
“Oh God, give me the courage and the strength to be worthy of being called a Christian.” -Karl Rahner, S.J.
On this Mother’s Day, I am thinking of Momma Mary, Queen Mother to us all. I have heard it said, or read, that Mary was the first and perfect Christian. Yes, that make sense to me. What courage it must have taken for her to say “Yes!” to the angel’s announcement. And yet, in the yes, there was humility and strength. She trusted throughout her life on this earth that she could actually parent God’s son, as if He needed it! But, He did. He was like us in all things but sin. He needed a mother’s love and care, right up to the cross. I that consider how she stood at the foot of the cross. She didn’t shout and yell about how wrong this was. Rather, she absorbed the pain and suffering and didn’t give it back to the world in kind. This is the courage and strength that I think of when considering the quote above. She has set a high bar for all of us, and yet it is a simple one – to love completely.
As the baby of eight kids, I pray in gratitude for my own mom today, and as a mother myself, for my own daughter who has become a most wonderful mother to Renee and Amelia. Happy Mom’s Day to you all. (Thanks to Brian Anderson and St. Benedict School for the beautiful Mary bulletin board! I love the images of Mary!)
As always, you remain in our prayers of great gratitude,
