2023 Convention & Contest
It is that time of the year again folks. Conference where we all come together to share ideas, auction stories, continuing education, and of course contest time. A time when some of the very best auctioneers and ringmen gather to compete and sharpen their skills. This year’s contests bring some modifications to the way the contests were held last year.

This year, in conjunction with the ringman contest, there will be a fun auction on Friday night. This is a very important event for our association as it grants new auctioneers interested in pursuing the auction industry the opportunity to get on the mic in a very easy environment and have the opportunity to sell. In addition, it also is a crucial fundraiser that aids the IAA in adding funds for the convention to cover the costs of the event. Any assistance and/or donation of items to this event is greatly needed and very much appreciated by your Association.

This year the Ringman champion will be crowned prior to the Bid Calling Contest on Saturday afternoon. They will have the opportunity to work the ring during the final round for the contestants. In addition to the change in the ringman crowning, the Bid Calling Contest has also undergone some scheduling changes. The five Bid Calling Finalists will be named Saturday evening during the banquet with the final round being held during the banquet. The champion being named immediately following the finals.

We are looking forward to gathering as an auction family and having the opportunity to spend some time with fellow auctioneers.

We are just a little over a month away from the 2023 Iowa Auctioneers Convention that is being held in January at the Sheraton Hotel in West Des Moines. This year as a board member I was tasked with scheduling real estate courses for Thursday, January 26th of the Convention. I am pleased to announce that this year we will have three great instructors and the classes are also eligible for continuing education credits from both the National Auctioneers Association and the Iowa Association of Realtors for anyone who needs credits to maintain their real estate license or to maintain their designations through the NAA.

The day will start off at 8 am with instructor Kyle Hansen who will be teaching a class on Land 101 (2-hour CE credit). A few of the highlights of this session will be: current land trends, different types of land, factors that affect land values, and different ways of marketing a property. At 10 am instructor David Whitaker will offer a class on Land Technology for Farmland (2-hour CE credit), which will explore mapping technology and how to use it, Cloud file storage, CRM software, graphic tools, and marketing flyers. After a one-hour lunch, we will resume at 1 pm for instructor David Brown who will finish out the afternoon teaching our members about 1031 Tax Exchange (2-hour CE credit).

If you are only available Thursday of the Convention the cost as (an Iowa Auctioneers Association member) to attend the real estate courses is only $50. For non-members, the Thursday courses are $75 for the day. Please be sure to register early and get a seat for Thursday because we are offering the classes to any Iowa Licensed Real Estate Agent.

Auctioneer Championship
We hope this letter finds you well, and that the Holiday Season is better than expected for each one of you. On behalf of the Iowa Auctioneers Association and our sponsors, we would like to extend an invitation to all Auctioneers to compete in the 2nd Annual Iowa Corn Classic Open Auctioneer Championship. The Corn Classic will be held Saturday, February 11 in conjunction with the Iowa Beef Expo located on the Historic Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. This is your chance to compete against some of the best Auctioneers from around the country, in front of a great set of judges and attendees at the Iowa Beef Expo. This year the contest will begin at 1 PM. This new time slot will allow more spectators at the Expo time to attend, enjoy and support the auction industry.

In 2022 we had Auctioneers from 6 states compete in the contest and five of those states were represented in the final round of the Top 7 which included IA, MO, AZ, TX, and NE. Each finalist received a custom banner along with a check and the Grand Champion (Iowa’s very own JJ Wise) received the purple banner, a custom belt buckle, and $5,000.

Another highlight of this event, each of the finalists had the opportunity to sell one very special item arranged by the Iowa Beef Expo. All the money raised, $3,625.00 in 2022, from the sale of that item was paid directly to the Iowa Beef Breeds Council for the Junior Scholarship fund. We are looking forward to working with the folks at the Beef Expo in supporting youth in agriculture. Needless to say, the Beef Expo is very pleased and surprised by the results from the first event and they are excited to have us back in 2023. 

As they say, you can’t win if you don’t play! So, for yourself – Enter and enjoy the day with us. As an IAA member - promote the contest to our friends who are Auctioneers, and promote the event to your family, friends, customers, and clients to attend and support the event. Especially the Scholarship fund. We are hopeful to double last year's results.
