Records from the Maryland Room's extensive vertical files on TCFL.
"In the fall of 1940, a unique gift to the Library is recorded in the Minutes of the Library Board. One of the trustees of the Library, whose name will go unreported here, posted a bet on the outcome of the Presidential Election: If Mr. Wilkie were elected President of the United States, this benefactor promised to give the considerable sum of $500 to the Library; if, on the other hand, Mr. Roosevelt should be reelected to an unprecedented third term, the other gentleman concerned in this wager, who was also a friend of the Library, would increase [the Library's] bank account to the amount of $500. Regardless of the outcome, the Library could not lose, and the money was subsequently added to the Library Fund."
This story is courtesy of the extensive research completed and written by Gilbert Byron in his 1965 history Talbot's Libraries (1676 - 1965).
Speaking of recording history - TCFL is excited to announce Library Memories, our signature oral history project celebrating our centennial year! We're inviting patrons, library lovers, and community members to participate in one-on-one, casual audio conversations where you can share your favorite library story or memory.
These recorded stories will become part of our Maryland Room collection, helping us preserve and celebrate the experiences that define our past and inspire our future.
