JIM CLICK - MILLIONS for TUCSON

for sale at JPNA meetings

The Jim Click Millions for Tucson 2025 edition has begun!  Mr. Click is raffling off three great prizes this year: the Grand Prize is a new 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid SX Prestige (MSRP $54,510).  The second prize is two round-trip, first-class airline tickets to anywhere in the world (some restrictions apply) and the third prize is $5,000 in cash.

One hundred percent of the ticket revenue we collect comes to our neighborhood! You gamble and we all win!

JP NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS oh my!

Traffic Circle at Edison and Fremont was hit and the metal art upended the week of Aug 18. Reported to 311 and now we await the decision as to who funds the repair.

Damaged circle at Lester and Santa Rita City has removed the damaged metal. Next step is to determine who funds the replacement art. It is hoped that this circle can reflect the historic area that surrounds it. It is located at the intersection of several Annie Lester built homes-Jefferson Park's original homesteader.

First week in August there were water work in the form of valves and hydrants near north Vine.  This should be the last of the prerequisite water works.

Demolitioin and grading expected to start on curbs, sidewalks, and ramps in mid-August.

We believe a complete date before Thanksgiving 2025.

(C. Doklan, Traffic Committee)

Cindy Doklan, Jefferson Park Traffic Chair, was interviewed by Craig Smith, KGUN 9 News:

TEP and 100+ft. Poles through Jefferson Park

Bottom line- overhead lines are NOT a done deal!

They are not good for Jefferson Park!

1. The neighborhood and Underground Arizona disagree with overheading lines in Jefferson Park. The city still has the ability to prevent over heading as per the U of A Area Plan.

2.TEP CAN RECOVER the cost of undergrounding according to Underground Arizona* (of which Jefferson Park is a member):

" We... managed to get APS and a judge to say that the ACC has no jurisdiction over transmission line cost recovery--only FERC has jurisdiction.... TEP's employees continue to tell people that the ACC will not let them underground transmission lines. And, despite being asked many times, it has never produced a single example of the ACC or FERC denying cost recovery of an underground line when there are tens of thousands of miles of underground lines in Arizona."

3.TEP proposes the 100+ ft poles go on the west side of Park all the way to Grant. They say they will bury the present distribution lines on the east side of Park, leaving only the 100+ ft poles on the west side. Burying the existing east side distribution lines may take years leaving BOTH sides of Park with lines (see current Grant Road construction).

4.TEP will seek a Special Exception permit to construct the substation. That does not mean they automatically have the right to install 100+ foot poles and overhead lines.

*Underground Arizona: "Underground Arizona is now an admitted Intervenor in the APS and TEP rate cases. We believe we can bring something different to the fight for more accurate rates. We also managed to get APS and a judge to say that the ACC has no jurisdiction over transmission line cost recovery--only FERC has jurisdiction."

Kiosk to include THEN and NOW information

Now filled with the history of the area as well as current neighborhood information. Thank you all!

Jason Butler, who created our metal entrance signs at Park and Euclid, recently finished the install of the kiosk. Thanks to Banner for the location. Thanks to neighbors, Liz, Kathy, Colleen, and Joan, who helped with design and arrangements. And thanks to all the donations from our neighbors that made this possible. It can be seen at the corner of Warren and Lester.

Visual barrier between hospital and neighborhood

"RTA Next" to finish Our Grant Road Project

...if the 1/2 cent sales tax passes

Plan to go before Voters in March

Regional Transportation Authority board set to approve proposal at Monday meeting; Election to be held in March. The supervisors are expected to approve it on Sept. 2.

The Plan Includes: Completion of projects originally in the RTA One Plan. That includes Grant Road through Midtown, 22nd Street between Kino Boulevard and I-10, First Avenue between Grant Road and Ina Road, Silverbell Road between Camino del Cerro and Ina Road and Houghton Road between Broadway and Tanque Verde Road. Estimated cost: $262 million.

March 10 election so voters can make the final call.

In March voters will be asked to cast three votes:

  • One will allow changes to projects approved as part of the original RTA plan in 2006.
  • Another will be to continue the 1/2 cent sales tax.
  • The third ballot question will be to approve or deny the list of projects.

[Mike] Ortega, the former Tucson city manager who stepped into the RTA’s driver’s seat in June shortly after the board fired longtime executive director Farhad Moghimi, said the plan balances a lot of needs in the community.

STAR coming - Sleep overs for homeless

Mayor Romero announced the construction of STAR . See her KOLD presentation

https://www.kold.com/2025/08/23/tucson-announces-site-safe-sleeping-site-homeless/

Site immediately against 520 apartment building

A complex to provide shelter to homeless women and gender neutral folks is being constructed 5 blocks west of Jefferson Park. Several weeks ago, Jefferson Park reached out to find plans, etc., but was unable to get any clear information as to permits, specific site plans, or nature of the operation from the Ward III office, PDSD, or the Mayor's office.

Projects to mitigate homelessness are commendable and must be on-going. However, in the spirit of transparency, any plans for building need to be shared with neighbors and published on the city plans and development site BEFORE it becomes fact ---just like any other neighborhood project.

Public meetings after the fact do not give residents input. Additionally, neighbors need to know specifics about supervision, hours and contacts in case of concerns.

UA student conducting research on windows

UA student Alyssa will be sharing her study at the September 24 Jefferson Park meeting. She is seeking research participants. See flyer below. Attend the meeting to ask questions or contact her directly.

Historic Jefferson Park home to disappear!

A permit request has been submitted to demolish this iconic historic Lester home and its adjoining guest house built by Annie Lester, our original homesteader. An important piece of Tucson history is set to fall! Our latest information is that the permit will be granted. Every home that loses its historic status by whatever means endangers the neighborhood historic status. If the neighborhood loses too many homes, the property tax benefit for contributing properties could be in jeopardy.
