REMINDER: Purple Bin Recycling Locations

As a reminder, the purple bin at the Mason District Government Center was removed in March 2026. We loved hosting it, but with construction underway on the police station, there’s no longer room to keep it there safely.

The good news is that there are more than 24 purple cans around Fairfax County and neighboring localities, so your jars and bottles still have a home!

Nearby spots to drop off glass:

  • Annandale: Wakefield Park
  • Alexandria: Tower Ct & S Whiting St
  • Arlington: 2800 S Taylor St

Quick tips:

  • Purple cans are open daily. Please stop by between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. so we’re good neighbors.
  • Clean bottles and jars of any color are welcome, and lids and labels can stay on.
  • Please skip lamps, light bulbs, ceramics, porcelain, mirrors, windows, and sheet glass.

Find the closest purple can on the county’s glass recovery map: Purple Can Club Glass Recovery Program - Google My Maps

Goodbye (for now) to the George Mason Library

+ a New Location for the Friends of George Mason Library!

A Library on Pause, a Community Still Turning the Page

A big thank you to the George Mason Friends and our neighbors at United Baptist Church for keeping the Friends’ good work going while George Mason Regional Library closes for its two-year renovation.

We know how much this library means to Mason District, and we’re excited that it’s expected to reopen in fall 2028 with new meeting, maker, teen, and study spaces! In the meantime, we’d love for you to keep the book love going by dropping off new or gently used books, CDs, and DVDs at the Friends’ donation bin at 7100 Columbia Pike.

If you have a larger donation of three or more boxes or bags, just call 703-720-9019 and they’ll set up a time. Your library holds are paused unless you move them to another branch, and e-books and audiobooks are always available 24/7 with your library card!

The 2nd Annual Mason District Arts Festival!

Mason District Showcases Incredible Talent

A heartfelt thank you to James Albright, the Mason District Arts Council, ArtsFairfax, and every artist, performer, volunteer, and neighbor who made our 2nd Annual Mason District Art Festival such a joy!

We had nearly 70 artists, vendors, and performers fill Columbia Pike with paintings, pottery, jewelry, music, dance, theater, and even stand-up comedy, and it was wonderful to see families creating together at the community painting and art-making stations.

We hope to see you at the next Mason District Arts Festival! If you’d like to get involved with the Mason District Arts Council, please reach out via the contact us form.

The 2026 Annandale Parade

Marching Strong Since 1950!

Thank you to the Annandale Chamber of Commerce and the roughly 75 organizations that made this year’s Annandale Parade one for the books! From Bolivian dance groups, school organizations, and Scout troops to local businesses, community advocates, and first responders, thousands of neighbors came out to enjoy the amazing showcase!

The parade has been a tradition since 1950, and this year’s was a great reminder of how much our community’s diversity is worth celebrating. If you missed it or want to relive it, the resources below have photos and recaps, and we hope to see you at next year’s parade!

Virginia Senator Saddam Salim's Elected Officials Summit

Many Communities, One Voice in Richmond

Thank you to Senator Saddam Salim for convening the SD37 Elected Officials Summit at Falls Church City Hall on October 23, and to the city, town, county, and state colleagues who took part.

The goal was simple: bring local and state leaders from across the 37th Senate District together to share information and shape legislative and budget priorities before the next General Assembly session.

We heard from budget, energy, cannabis regulation, and transportation experts, as well as had time for an open discussion on where our communities can work together. As Fairfax County's Legislative Chairman, I came away encouraged that when our localities speak with one voice, Fairfax County and Mason District residents are better heard in Richmond.

If you're interested in staying informed on Virginia and Fairfax County's legislative updates, please see the below resources.

Examining Environmental Justice w/ Carnegie Mellon University

Policy, Pints, and a Packed Panel on Environmental Justice

Thank you to Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College for inviting me to "Policy and Pints", and to the students and alumni who joined us with thoughtful questions!

On October 23, I took part in a moderated panel on environmental justice, including a conversation about what green advocacy means in practice. From clean air to safe streets, our discussion was shaped around how important it is for every neighbor to have a voice in the conversations affecting their quality of life.

Conversations like this one remind me why it matters to bring local perspective to national policy, and I’m grateful to the next generation of public servants for their energy and engagement.

Lights On After School FCPS Celebration

Keeping the "Lights On" at Glasgow

Thank you to Principal Lisa Barrow, the Glasgow Middle School staff, and the students and families who made yesterday’s Lights On Afterschool celebration such a bright night.

After-school programs keep kids safe, spark new interests in everything from science to the arts, and give working families peace of mind. They're also where many students find a place to belong whether that's through a sewing club or playing chess!

Glasgow has shown what that can look like, recently earning recognition for sharply reducing chronic absenteeism, with after-school cohorts as part of its approach.

I’m grateful to everyone who makes these opportunities possible for our students, and I’ll keep standing up for after school programs in Mason District.

Mason Milestones

As Supervisor of Mason District, I take tremendous pride in listening to community voices, voting on actions that better Mason District, and making sure that YOU hear about it.

In this section of the Mason Matters newsletter, I'd like to share some "milestones" that are being accomplished right here in Mason.

If you have any projects or groups you'd like to nominate for this segment, please send them to my office via email Mason@fairfaxcounty.gov

$200 Additional Fine for Speeding Signs on Lacy Boulevard

Slowing Down on Lacy Boulevard

Thank you to the Lacy Boulevard neighbors who spoke up about speeding in their neighborhood and to our Fairfax County Department of Transportation team for the traffic review behind this decision.

On October 27, the Board of Supervisors approved “$200 Additional Fine for Speeding” signs on Lacy Boulevard between Columbia Pike and Colfax Avenue. The county’s traffic study confirmed a real speeding problem on this stretch, and the signs remind drivers that speeding on this road carries a $200 fine on top of other penalties.

The Board has asked FCDOT to schedule installation as soon as possible, so keep an eye out for the new signs and thank you for keeping our neighborhood streets safe!

Volunteer Opportunities

Support ACCA's Food Pantry

Scouting for Food in November

Scouting for Food (SFF) is Scouting America National Capital Area Council’s (NCAC’s) largest annual community service project to help feed families in need by collecting non-perishable food and distributing it to local food pantries and food banks throughout the Washington, DC region.

For 40 years, Scouts across the Washington, DC metropolitan area have united to fight hunger through their annual campaign. This fall, our Scouts will once again mobilize thousands of youth and families to collect food donations for neighbors facing food insecurity.

Small Acts. Big Impact.

A bag of groceries may seem small. But when Scouts, families, volunteers, and neighbors all contribute together, those individual acts of generosity become much bigger. They become meals for families, support for local food organizations, stronger communities, and a generation of young people learning that service is part of leadership. That is what Scouting for Food is all about.

How You Can Help

You will receive a reminder on November 7 on your front door (or nearby). You then have a week until November 11 to shop for non-perishable food and hygiene products. On Saturday, November 14, place your donation outside your home by 8:30 a.m. for the Scouts to pick up. They will then deliver to their local food pantry, including the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA).

Fairfax County Department of Transportation Public Meetings

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will host three virtual public meetings on Nov. 4, 5 and 9, 2026, to present proposed roadway restriping improvements, including new bicycle lanes and marked crosswalks where feasible, in several Fairfax County districts.

The proposed improvements would be implemented in coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) 2027 Repaving Program. By presenting the proposals well in advance of the 2027 repaving season, FCDOT aims to gather community feedback and finalize striping proposals for VDOT consideration and approval.

Each meeting will focus on proposed improvements in specific districts, with some neighboring districts combined into one meeting. Residents can participate online or by phone. Public comments will be accepted for two weeks following each meeting.
