From Loss to Legacy: Rhshawn's Path Home

Two years ago, Rhshawn experienced one of the hardest moments of her life—the loss of her grandmother, who raised her in Winston-Salem. Today, she finds comfort in knowing her grandmother would be proud as she reaches a major milestone: becoming a Habitat homeowner.

Rhshawn and her 11-year-old son have been visiting their future home regularly since the first bricks were laid. At her wall-raising, she reflected, “This is what you work hard for.” She shared her hopes for the home, saying, “This house will be a place where we can do holidays with my older son, who is 26, and enjoy other family and friends… My sons deserve a home that will always be theirs and will always be there for them.”

Before joining Habitat, Rhshawn never imagined homeownership was possible. Encouraged by a friend, she applied and discovered new confidence through the program’s financial education. “I never, ever thought I would be a homeowner,” she said. “I didn’t know how to do anything other than just pay bills and go to work… I never knew anything about how to save.”

She’s passing those lessons on to her son. “Now I’m teaching my son how to put some savings aside… so he can feel like, ‘Hey, I got this on my own.’”

Building alongside other Habitat families has created lasting connections—and new skills. “I’ve learned so much—how to lay floors, put walls up, put windows in… Things I would have never stepped out to do on my own.”

When asked what she would say to Habitat supporters, her message was clear: “You are giving people a chance… A place to live for a lifetime—that’s something not everyone has.”
