New! Construction Begins to Replace Lake Wales’ Grove Manor With Affordable Housing

CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks

Big changes are coming to an aging public housing community in Lake Wales.

Patrick Walker has called Grove Manor home for 35 years. Now he is watching the only neighborhood he’s known prepare for a major change.

Construction is now underway to redevelop Grove Manor into affordable housing. Tampa Bay 28 reporter Rebecca Petit first highlighted the $29 million project in February.

The new Grove Manor will feature 210 affordable housing units, including apartments and single-family homes, all designed as a modern, walkable community. Walker said this will expand housing opportunities for families like his.

“They have 2-bedroom apartments that’re right down the road, that’s $1,550, and it shouldn’t be that. There is not enough money in Lake Wales for the cost of living to be that high,” Walker said.

The Lake Wales Housing Authority secured $21 million in federal tax credits to help make the project possible. The Lake Wales Community Redevelopment Agency contributed $1 million toward the design phase, while Polk County added another $1.5 million.

The Salvation Army plans to construct a warehouse building on its property at 3135 Kenilworth Ave. in Sebring, next to its thrift store.

A design review application for a 4,900-square-foot metal building went before the Sebring Community Redevelopment Agency Board for approval.

The proposed construction consists of a new warehouse addition to support the storage of donated items, seasonal materials, and supplies used for community outreach programs. The facility will also support community-related events and storage associated with the Angel Tree program and other holiday assistance programs.

Existing parking, access drives, and loading areas will continue to serve the site and provide circulation for staff, volunteers, and deliveries.

The proposed warehouse addition will be designed to complement the existing buildings on site and maintain a clean and professional appearance consistent with the surrounding area.

New! Plant City Approves Grant for Bing Rooming House Museum Restoration

CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks

Plant City commissioners have approved a $250,000 matching grant to help restore the Bing Rooming House Museum, which is still recovering from major flooding caused by Hurricane Milton.

The museum, owned by the Improvement League of Plant City CDC, has been undergoing cleanup for the past 19 months. William Thomas Jr., president of the organization, said floodwater rose about four feet inside the building. “The Bing House Museum suffered major water intrusion, rising to about four feet,” Thomas said. “As you can see, our floor is buckling along the inside of the museum.”

Museum leaders have raised $50,000 toward restoration. The city’s $250,000 matching grant, funded through community redevelopment agency dollars, will help move the work forward.

Plant City Commissioner and Vice Mayor Jason Jones said the money will help restore an important part of the community’s history.

McCollum Hall Concept Gets OK, Includes Restaurant, Music Venue, Business Center

CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks

The newest plans to revive historic McCollum Hall near downtown Fort Myers include a restaurant, music venue and business center. Community Redevelopment Agency commissioners approved the concept during its Wednesday meeting.

Jeffrey Mudgett, one of the partners of Parker Mudgett Smith Architects, presented the plan to the Mayor and City Council members acting as CRA commissioners.

The approval included a two-story design that includes a 160-seat restaurant, a music venue/theater that could hold 200 to 300 people, a balcony, community room, recording studio, flexible outdoor space and a business center that could house as many as 18 tenants.

McCollum Hall, at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Cranford Avenue, was built in 1938 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Many Black musical acts played at the hall, attracting white and Black audiences during a time of segregation.

Pompano Beach City Hall Design Wins AAC, Planning Board Approval

CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks

The proposed design for Pompano Beach’s new City Hall and parking garage has cleared two city review boards, moving the downtown civic project forward while drawing sharp criticism from some residents online.

The new City Hall design received approval from the Architectural Appearance Committee on May 5 and from the Planning & Zoning Board on May 27, according to information provided by the city.

The project is part of the broader downtown effort tied to the Downtown Master Development Agreement with RocaPoint Partners, LLC, doing business through its affiliate RP Pompano LLC. That agreement was approved during a June 20, 2024, special joint meeting of the City Commission and the city’s CRA. City materials describe the proposal as a contemporary civic campus focused on transparency, accessibility and public use, with landscaped plazas, pedestrian connections and public spaces intended to support both municipal operations and downtown activity.

Palmetto Pours Millions into Downtown Redevelopment Projects Aimed at Transforming City into a Destination

CRAs build better communities! #redevelopmentworks

With major public and private investments underway, officials are working to turn Manatee County’s oldest city into a destination of its own, one that balances growth, tourism, and redevelopment with the charm of its historic roots.

The Palmetto CRA is leading several projects designed to improve the downtown area and waterfront while encouraging more visitors and residents to spend time in the city.

CRA Executive Director Rowena Young said the goal is to create a vibrant downtown while protecting what makes Palmetto unique.”We’ve been here since the 1800s,” Young said. “It’s a quaint, historic, down-to-earth community where we want vibrancy, but we also want to keep the character of Palmetto.”

One of the newest developments broke ground Tuesday: an 8,000-square-foot retail destination in front of the Palmetto Marriott Resort and Spa.

The project is expected to open in December and will include a coffee shop, restaurant, and retail space aimed at improving walkability for hotel guests and visitors near the Bradenton Area Convention Center.

Officials say the broader investment in the area is expected to bring significant economic returns.
