Evensong

5 pm, In the Cathedral

The music at Evensong spans the centuries, as is often the case. One of the giants of the Tudor period, Thomas Tallis, is represented by his luminous setting (one of two that he wrote) of the ancient Compline hymn Te lucis ante terminum, as well as by the famous tune sung today at the Phos hilaron. Charles Wood, a leader in the reformation of Anglican church music in the post-Victorian era, wrote several settings of the evening canticles, the one in E-flat being a favorite of the choir. Of all the American composers writing in the broad, mainstream Protestant tradition, Jane Marshall is, in my estimation, the most creative and technically skilled. A lifelong Dallas resident, long associated with Southern Methodist University, Marshall is renowned especially for her anthems and hymn tunes. Two of her hymn tunes, Walden and Jacob, are in Hymnal 1982, and both bear the same marks of restraint, sing-ability and craftsmanship that are on full display in Blessed is the one. Note how Marshall “paints” the last line of the text and achieves this with a change of key and a turn toward a serene, pastoral approach, inspired, if you will, by the innovations of the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and his disciples.

Election Eve Prayer Service

Monday, November 2, 6 pm, Virtual Meeting

On the eve of Election Day, Bishop Susan Brown Snook and leaders from across the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego invite you to gather online for a service of prayer on Monday, November 2.

In a season when public life can feel anxious, divided, and uncertain, the Church is called to something deeper than partisanship: to remember who we are in Christ. Together, we will pray for our country, for those who lead and serve, for the poor and vulnerable, for peace among nations, for the human family, and for wisdom in the days ahead.

This service is an invitation to place our hopes, fears, and responsibilities before God and to renew our commitment to seek and serve Christ in one another. Whatever the days ahead may bring, we gather as one body, trusting that our deepest allegiance is to the way of Jesus and that our common life is shaped by prayer, mercy, justice, and love. Join us online at for this diocesan Election Eve Prayer Service (Click Here).

All Saints Ofrenda

This year, DĂa de los Muertos takes place on Sunday, November 1 and Monday, November 2, with major community festivals, altar displays, and processions across San Diego and Southern California running from October 15 through November 2.

November 1 is All Saints Sunday in our Anglican tradition and each year at this time we build a temporary altar or ofrenda (trans. "offering") where we display pictures of deceased loved ones, along with samples of their favorite foods and beverages, and seasonal decorations. Our ofrenda will be in place Sunday, October 25 and you can bring pictures and offerings to honor a loved one who has died, and deceased companion animals are included.

At our morning services on November 1, we will read aloud a list of those known to the congregation who have died since last year’s All Saints Sunday, November 2, 2025. If you have a name to add to this necrology, please send it via email before October 30 to the Rev. Canon Brooks Mason at masonb@stpaulcathedral.org.

The ofrenda and offerings will be disassembled and removed November 3 and after that time personal offerings may be picked up at the cathedral office reception desk between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm on weekdays.
