Human Resources
We talk a lot about what it means to stay healthy in our line of work, but we must also emphasize the importance of self-care. Self-care is the act of being intentional about your physical, emotional, and mental health.

As a result of participating in self-care regimes, we are better able to cope with daily stressors, and in turn, we are better able to understand what we need in order to be happy. When we are happy and self aware, we are then able to build better and stronger relationships with those around us.

The benefits of practicing self-care are broad and have been linked to positive health outcomes such as reduced stress, improved immune system, increased productivity, and higher self-esteem.

Below are some of the many practices that are recommended for simple self-care:
  • Get enough sleep – Between 7 to 9 hours each night.
  • Exercise – Ideally, 3 to 5 times a week for 30 minutes.
  • Watch your diet – Follow the 80/20 rule (eat healthy 80% of the time and indulge only 20% of the time.)
  • Go outside – This has been linked to an increasing lifespan and decreasing stress levels.
  • Practice yoga and meditation – Both can help you reduce stress levels and increase overall health.

Safety
August is Hand Safety month.
Your hands are used for virtually every task you perform at work and at home, and because they are used so much they are often easily injured. It is critical that you keep your fingers and hands out of the way of any possible obstacle that could lacerate, crush, or fracture your hands.

Gloves are the most common type of personal protective equipment to help with the prevention of hand injuries. Different types of gloves are used for different types of jobs; and it's imperative that you're wearing the proper gloves for your job to prevent injury.

Though gloves are a huge factor in hand safety, you should also be considering all the components and safe work practices that can keep you and your coworkers safe.

Consider all the following to protect your hands from injury:

  • Use tools to remove your hands from the line of fire when doing work/tasks that could result in injury to your hands or fingers. Using tools such as push sticks when using a table saw is an example of how you can remove your hands from the line of fire.
  • Avoid using fixed open blades/knives. Always use a safety knife that limits the amount of blade that is exposed as well as has a safety feature that can retract the blade when pressure is let off the handle.
  • Never put your hand in an area where you can not see it.
  • Always wear the proper hand protection for the task you are doing. Understand the limitations of your gloves and what tasks they are appropriate for.
  • Never work on an energized piece of equipment. Lock and tag out the equipment to ensure there will not be an unintentional start-up while you are working on that piece of equipment.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and what others are doing.

Protect yourself and others. A serious hand injury can result in a negative impact on your ability to work and your quality of life.
Camille's Corner: Work Zone Power
As the summer begins to wind down, we notice that many people are moving or are cleaning out their homes. A refresher on proper lifting techniques will ensure that you stay safe this August.

Assess the object you are lifting. If the object is heavy, enlist the help of someone who can assist you. As you get ready to lift the object, prepare your major muscle groups with light stretches and exercise. These exercises can be as simple as mini squats, lunge twists, static side bends, hamstring and quad stretches.

Once your muscles are warmed up, be sure to face your entire body towards the object you are lifting. Taking a wide stance, squat down, and take a firm grip of the object. Hug the object close to your body and lift to a standing position using the muscles in your legs.

Always ensure that you maintain body alignment during the entire process of lifting and lowering the object. When lowering the object, follow the same precautions you used to lift.

Remember to always always practice safe lifting techniques and ask for help when lifting objects heavier than 50lbs.!
