A Night Out in

The City Beautiful

Make it an evening in The City Beautiful on Friday, Nov. 6, as Gables Gallery Night and Giralda Live bring art, live music and outdoor dining to downtown Coral Gables.

Start with Gables Gallery Night, from 6 to 10 p.m., and explore exhibitions at participating galleries and art venues. Held on the first Friday of each month, the event invites the community to discover local artists and support the city’s arts community. The city’s complimentary trolley and Freebee services offer convenient ways to travel between galleries.

Then head to Giralda Plaza for Giralda Live, from 7 to 11 p.m. Featured band Pamir y La Pachanguísima, led by Grammy-winning Venezuelan musician Pamir Guanchez, will perform salsa, tropical rhythms and jazz from 8 to 10 p.m. Browse local vendors, enjoy dinner at a plaza restaurant and kick off the weekend in The City Beautiful.

Grass Won't Grow in Your Swale?

Having trouble growing grass in your swale? The city allows an alternative option using approved decorative crushed stone combined with low-growing plants, particularly in areas where heavy shade or vehicle traffic makes growing grass difficult.

White gravel is not permitted. Residents interested in installing crushed stone must obtain a Public Works permit and comply with the city's material, planting and installation requirements as per the city’s swale package procedure. There is no city permit fee for work along city-maintained streets and roads. If you have already modified your swale without a permit, you must apply for a retroactive permit.

Need guidance? Contact the Public Works department for assistance with swale improvement options and the permitting process.

A Reason to Smile

Coral Gables Dentistry is giving The City Beautiful another reason to smile. The practice recently received a 2026 Commercial Beautification Award for its efforts to enhance the visual character of Coral Gables.

Congratulations to the team for keeping smiles bright and The City Beautiful true to its name.

What To Do With Political Signage?

Now that elections are over, you may wonder what to do with your political signs. The city will accept them at the Recycling Drive-Thru event on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon in the City Hall parking lot.

Reusing those post-election yard signs and their H-frames are an inexpensive, eco-friendly way to keep them out of landfills. Consider painting and personalizing the signs for special events or yard sales, or repurposing them into a do-it-yourself storage box. The metal H-frames can anchor holiday lights or support plants, such as tomatoes, in your vegetable garden.

City Spotlight

Coral Gables Historic Villages - The Chinese Village

Hidden within Coral Gables is one of the city’s most distinctive historic neighborhoods, The Chinese Village. Built between 1926 and 1927, the village was designed by architect and scholar Henry Killam Murphy, who was known for his study of traditional Chinese architecture.

Inspired by Chinese residential design, the homes are arranged as a unified compound, connected by a common wall, and separated by decorative gates that provide privacy while creating architectural harmony. The village extends along Sansovino and Castania Avenues, Maggiore Street, Riviera Drive and Menendez Avenue.

Reminiscent of imperial buildings from China’s Ming dynasty, the Chinese Village transports passersby back in time, while highlighting the international and historical influences found throughout The City Beautiful. Nearly a century later, the Chinese Village remains a remarkable part of Coral Gables and a lasting example of thoughtful, timeless design.
