September 2025 Newsletter

Hi everyone and happy almost autumn! :)

I've been trying to get this newsletter written and sent out for over a week to let you know.....autumn teas are in and are available in the online shop at https://www.pleasuresoftea.com!! See the New Teas section at the bottom of this newsletter for the list of returning favorites :)

Some new teas from China have also just arrived and I am working diligently to get them cupped and added to the website. They are also listed below and will all be available for purchase on the website within a week or two. Since I brought in a fair number of fantastic new teas from China, I figured I would write a series of newsletters about the different tea-producing provinces and their notable teas. Starting this month we will be exploring the Yunnan province and will explore a different province each month for the next several months. Stay tuned for this journey!

As a reminder, orders are shipped on Mondays and Thursdays and deadlines are Saturdays and Tuesdays at 5:00PM EST, respectively. If the orders are not picked up by my postal carrier on either of these days, then they will ship the next day. As always, I fill and ship orders as quickly as I can. Even though there is a schedule, if I am able to fill an order that comes in past the deadline then I will!

As always, I appreciate your continued support of my small business!! Enjoy the last several days of summer :)

Teas of Yunnan

The storied history of tea and the Yunnan Province of China are intertwined and go back thousands of years. In fact, many botanists believe that the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, may have originated in this mostly mountainous, land-locked region in southwestern China. It is populated by many ethnic peoples, many of whom have been consuming tea as a beverage, food, and medicine for at least 1,800 years. This province is considered to be the "birthplace of tea", as this is the area where humans first began to consume tea leaves. The teas from Yunnan are predominately produced from a large-leaf variety of the tea plant that is indigenous to the region; it is closer to the variety that produces the Assam teas of India than the one used to produce teas in other regions of China. Other teas are crafted with the indigenous, wild-grown purple leaf variety of the tea plant and some with the cultivated purple leaf variety. Some of Yunnan's most prized teas come from the ancient forests that contain the remaining indigenous wild tea trees, which are reported to be between 1,000 and 2,700 years old.

The teas from Yunnan are complex and interesting and worthwhile to explore. The most notable teas are black and Pu-er teas; however, green, white, and oolong teas are also produced. Pu-er is the traditionally manufactured tea and is named after the town of Pu-er, where historically all of the tea-makers in the region used to bring their tea to sell. It is known as "black" tea in China and its history of manufacture goes back close to 1,500 years, when the tea was formed into "cakes" or "bricks" for easy transport to the people of Tibet. Pu-er is fermented and aged, which leads to a type of tea that is very complex. There are no specific general characteristics for Pu-er tea because they are determined by how old the leaves are and the conditions for aging. Young Pu-ers may be similar to a green or yellow tea being light-bodied, slightly astringent, with fresh, grassy and subtle earthy notes; however, a fully aged Pu-er, which usually takes somewhere between 10 to 15 years, is medium- to full-bodied, smooth, with earthy and sweet notes. Pu-er can be found in several forms: Sheng (raw) or Shou (cooked); loose or different compressed shapes; plain or blended with different flowers, flavors, and other ingredients.

While Pu-er has a long history in Yunnan, the production of black tea only began in 1938 and today Yunnan is China's largest black tea producing region. Yunnan black tea is known for being full-bodied and rich, and is also very complex, ranging from earthy to fruity to spicy to rich and sweet with notes of cacao. Some of the more prized Yunnan black teas are comprised solely of the buds of the tea plant, which turn golden when processed.

The green, white and wulong teas are much rarer and are a treat that will not disappoint. As with the Pu-er and black teas, these types of tea are also complex and can range from light- to medium-bodied, with a range of fresh, grassy, earthy, fruity, smoky, vegetal, and/or floral notes.

I offer a selection of each of these types of teas from the Yunnan province of China, including a brand new wulong tea from Yunnan! My selection demonstrates the range of complexity of these amazing teas and they can be found in the online shop https://www.pleasuresoftea.com. To easily find them, type Yunnan in the search box. Each tea will have a description about where and how the tea is grown, cultivar information and/or aromatic and taste profiles. Enjoy your "travels" to Yunnan and feel free to share your experience! :)
