Lunch Break Special at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum
|
|
On Tuesday, July 5th at noon, the museum will present their monthly Lunch Break Special with Ron Robinson, talking about the Battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Robinson has been a student of the American Civil War and Abraham Lincoln for over 60 years and has been a long-time member of the Lincoln Forum. He will present an overview of the battle and the key military and civilian leadership of the time. He will also cover a less-discussed topic about why the battle occurred in the first place. It should be fascinating. Regular musuem admission will apply.
While you're there, check out the temporary display of antique purses from the collection of the late Mary Lauderdale. Here's a link to a recent article in the Herald Banner about this display, which will be on view into August.
And did you know that the museum also has a receptacle in front of the building for used and worn American flags. When the bin is full, the flags are taken to be disposed of properly.

Greenville Family Theater presents Mary Poppins
|
Tickets are now on sale for one of my favorite arts events of the summer: Greenville Family Theater's summer musical presentation. This year, they are presenting Mary Poppins over two weekends: July 8 & 9 and 15 & 16. Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic, common sense, and a “spoonful of sugar”, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.” Tickets ($10-$25) are available at this link. You will be amazed at the talent shown by the young people on the stage.

The Farmers Market hours are 9 am - 12 noon every Saturday. Our Farmer's Market is very special and unique, because everything sold there is grown or made in Texas. Of course, that means you won't ever find pineapples at our market, but you WILL find the most delicious seasonal produce, as well as cheese, yogurt, honey, eggs, jams, pickles, nuts, breads, sweets, grass-fed meats, locally roasted coffee and more. The selection will vary from week to week, so the best way to know what's going to be available is to subscribe to their weekly newsletter. Send me an email and I'll see you are added to the list. It's held at Market Square, on the far eastern end of Lee Street in Downtown. You can also keep up with the market through the website and Facebook page. Saturday, July 30 at 6:20 pm: Ronnie McDowell with guests George Dickerson and Colin Dexter. Ronnie McDowell is an American country music artist, songwriter, and painter. He is best known for his 1977 song “The King Is Gone”, a tribute to Elvis Presley, who had recently died. From that single onward, McDowell charted more than thirty Top 40 hits on the Billboard country music charts. Two of his singles – “Older Women” and “You’re Gonna Ruin My Bad Reputation” — reached Number One on the country charts, while eleven more reached Top Ten. He has also released more than twenty studio albums and has been signed to Curb Records since 1986. Tickets: $25-$75
Saturday, August 13 at 7 pm: Jimmy Fortune. Jimmy Fortune toured, sang, and performed with the legendary Statler Brothers for 21 years. Fortune quickly lived up to his name. He wrote the group’s second No. 1 hit, “Elizabeth,” on their 1983 album Today, and followed that with two more No. 1 hits “My Only Love” (from 1984’s Atlanta Blue) and “Too Much On My Heart” (from 1985’s Pardners in Rhyme). Fortune also wrote the top-10 hit “Forever” from 1986’s Four for the Show and co-wrote the top-10 hit “More Than a Name on the Wall” from 1988’s The Greatest Hits. After The Statler Brothers retired on October 26, 2002, Jimmy seized the opportunity to launch a solo career to share new music with his fans. Jimmy is currently living in Nashville, writing, touring, and recording. Tickets: $29-$69

GISD TEACHERS' SUPPLY CLOSET IS RUNNING LOW! Some of the GISD retired teachers got together and started a supply closet of items that teachers commonly need in their classrooms (and often use their own money to purchase them!). Some of the supplies are running low and I'm sharing the list with you in case you're interested in helping with this. They are in need of composition books, washable markers, colored pencils, Kleenex, highlighters, pointed scissors, and file folders. If you would like to make a donation of any of these items - or make arrangements to help purchase some - please contact Jan Teeters at this email address: supplies@greenvilleisd.com.

FREE MULCH FROM THE CITY
Did you know that you can pick up FREE mulch courtesy of GEUS? The piles of shredded trimmings from clearing the power lines are located at the water treatment plant’s grounds at 501 Wesley Street, off Sockwell Blvd. You can pick up as much as you need, but you’ll need to bring your own bags or pickup for hauling, as well as a shovel and gloves to move it. There is no one available to assist you so bring your own helpers, too. But it’s FREE!

It also has tabs for Parks & Recreation, the Library, Farmers Market, GMA Tourism, and Calendar of Events. You can get it at either link below. I've downloaded it and I think it will become something I refer to regularly. Good job, Greenville!
