PET BLESSING BLESSES

ONE AND ALL!

We had an amazing time with all those who attended. Each furry friend received a special blessing by Fr. Andrew, Mother Mary Ellen or Fr. Chris and we also had a remembrance poster to honor our animal companions who have passed on. We were very grateful that Maureen Hunter from Animal Aid and Sandy Cahill from Furry Friends were able to join us for the Pet Blessing as well.

Many thanks to teens Jack & Charlotte Ledwell, Chloe Bruno, Sofia Bruno, and Ian Ouellette for helping and to Steve Demoreuille and Sandy McGrath for all the set up.

YOUTH GROUP PET FOOD & TOWEL DRIVE:

AMAZING SUCCESS!

We are very grateful for all the donations

that you all generously provided!

Many thanks to all who have contributed!

Our food, towels and blankets were shared with two rescue groups: Animal Aid and Furry Friends. Monetary donations will be divided among Animal Aid, Furry Friends and the South FL Wildlife Center.

WHO WANTS SOME

ADORABLE KITTENS?

(WHO DOESN'T?!)

Among those present at the Pet Blessing were St. Gregory's parishioner Nathalie Fleites and her gorgeous kittens -- all of whom are available for adoption. Nathalie has lovingly cared for these rescues and would love to see them settled in a loving, welcoming home.

CONFIRMATION CLASS: LIFE IN CHRIST

(Grades 6, 7, 8 and others)

Confirmation Class meets every Sunday at 9:10am during the school year in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).

Our journey to Confirmation for young people is a three-year program. Our program seeks to nurture the faith of our young people as they prepare for their high school years and beyond, giving them a solid foundation for a Christ-centered life. The Confirmation Class experience may also include retreats, service opportunities and other activities. All young people in grades 6, 7 and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.

During Confirmation we explore:

-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith

-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit

-- A life of ministry and service as disciples of Jesus

-- The Anglican/Episcopal tradition in all its breadth and depth

Special presentation

by Paige Shortsleeves of P.E.A.C.E.

Paige will engage us in an introduction to the work of PEACE (People Engaged in Active Community Efforts) and show us how we can all contribute to identifying and solving our communities' problems and challenges.

WHAT DO WE DO DURING UPPER ROOM TIME?

Following our pattern of Pause, Listen, Reflect, Pray and Go,

we build on our previous themes of

What will you do with your one wild and precious life?

(based on Mary Oliver's poem The Summer Day) and

"What makes you come alive?"

(from a quote by theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman)

"Building Beloved Community"

In conjunction with St. Gregory's church-wide Beloved Community initiative we worked on how our lives and gifts reflect God's love in the world.

Theme for 2026-2027 -- "I matter. I belong. I love."

We will delve more deeply into our core identity statement:

I am a beloved child of God. (I matter.)

I am a member of the Body of Christ. (I belong.)

I have a unique calling and purpose in this world. (I love.)

As we have in the past, we continue to use some Benedictine practices to bring more balance, proportion and harmony into our lives.

SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM...

On Sunday, Oct 11 we gathered in Harris Hall to enjoy Brothers Breakfast and continue our discussion about recovery with Gena Vallee.

We began as always with our meditation/prayer time, reminding ourselves that we can always take a moment to center ourselves in God before moving on to our next tasks.

We then moved into a conversation about recovery: what it means to be in recovery, and assumptions and misconceptions about addiction using some true/false statements to facilitate conversation. Gena shared her story and facilitated our conversation. We ended with a prayer from the Book of Common Prayer (see below) before heading to the 10am service.

A sample of the true/false statements that we explored:

Only poor, uneducated people are addicts.

Addicts can’t hide — it’s always obvious that they are using.

You’re only an addict if you use illegal drugs like cocaine or heroin.

You can tell who is an addict just by looking at them.

Being an addict is always your choice.

The only thing you need to quit is your own willpower.

Real Christians can’t be addicts.

Jesus would say to an addict, “Go kick your habit first. If you stay clean,

you can be one of my followers.”

OUR CLOSING PRAYER FOR THIS SUNDAY

O blessed Lord [Jesus], you ministered to all who came to you: Look with compassion upon all who have lost their health and freedom [through addiction]. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to those who care for them give patient understanding and persevering love.

Amen.

(Prayer 56 Episcopal Book of Common Prayer)

THE BEST OF STUDENT PODCASTS

What do Americans really know about their country? What do we mean when we think of "home"? When a father dies, what lessons does he leave for his son? And, was Andy Warhol a woman named Patricia?

These topics – from fifth graders in Hewlett, N.Y., a high school student in Ann Arbor, Mich., an 11th grader in Cicero, Ill., and a middle schooler in Brooklyn – make up just a few of the many questions that students around the country turned into audio stories and sent us this year. Their answers to those questions are among our 2026 honorees as the best student podcasts in America.

In its eighth year, the NPR Student Podcast Challenge received nearly 1,500 podcasts from students in 42 states and the District of Columbia. Our education team spent the summer listening to each of them, and from all those entries we've chosen the very best.

READING: A CIVIL RIGHT?

The right to vote, the right to freedom of speech, the right to due process, and ... the right to read? You may not think of the ability to dive into a good book as a civil right, but Reading Partners does — and it’s changing the lives of thousands of students across the country.

Reading ability among American children has not fully rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, and achievement gaps based on demographics like income persist. In 2022, just 33% of all fourth graders performed at or above “proficient” on the National Assessment of Educational Progress; that number dipped to 19% for those who were eligible for free or reduced cost lunch.

The stakes are high: Students who are not proficient readers by the end of third grade are four times less likely than their proficient peers to graduate high school on time. So Reading Partners is stepping in, partnering with schools and communities around the U.S. to provide individualized tutoring to students who need it.

Operating on the aforementioned belief that “reading is a civil right,” the organization has mobilized over 100,000 volunteers to deliver 3.7 million tutoring sessions since its founding in 1999. Read the full article to hear from Reading Partners program managers and a volunteer about the impact it has on kids.

FANTASTIC PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES!

Discover a place where creativity comes alive for kids, teens, and families.

At the Boca Raton Museum of Art, our Youth & Family programs invite visitors of all ages to explore art through hands-on making, playful learning, and meaningful experiences. Whether you're joining us for a drop-in workshop, a family event, or an adventure in the galleries, there's always something inspiring to discover together.

Explore Anytime

Some of our favorite ways to experience the Museum don't require a reservation. Grab a kit at the front desk and dive in — on your own schedule, at your own pace.

Art Tales

Art Tales invites children ages 4–8 years old and their caregivers to explore art and stories together in the galleries. Available to check out anytime at the front desk, each Art Tales kit is centered on a featured artwork currently on view in the museum. Inside each kit, families will find a book, looking prompts, and gallery friendly activities that encourage shared reading, close looking, and conversation. This program is funded through the generous support of the Florida Blue Foundation.

Sketching Kits

Pick up a Sketching Kit at the front desk and turn any gallery visit into an art-making adventure. Each kit includes a sketchbook, pencils, and prompts to help you observe, draw, and respond to the artwork around you — no experience necessary. Perfect for visitors of all ages who want to slow down and see the galleries through a different lens.

Tips for Exploring the Galleries Together

  • Look closely and take your time. Slow down and notice the small details — colors, textures, expressions, patterns. Encourage children to share what they see first.
  • Ask open-ended questions. Try prompts like "What do you notice?", "How does this artwork make you feel?", or "What do you think is happening here?" There are no wrong answers!
  • Make it playful. Turn looking into a game — find shapes, spot colors, or imagine what sounds an artwork might make. A little play goes a long way.
  • Follow your child's curiosity. Let young visitors lead the way. If a piece captures their attention, pause and explore it together.
  • Use your body and senses. Try posing like a figure in a sculpture, tracing lines in the air, or imagining textures with your hands. Movement helps kids connect deeply with what they see.
  • Connect art to their world. Ask: "Does this remind you of anything?" or "If you made a piece like this, what would it be about?" Art becomes more meaningful when it relates to their lives.
  • Celebrate their ideas. Affirm every observation — excitement and confidence grow when kids feel heard.

Upcoming Youth & Family Programs

From weekly drop-in workshops to seasonal family celebrations, there's always something happening at the Museum. Browse what's coming up and find your next experience.

The Art School offers a hands-on, instructional approach across multiple mediums to aspiring artists of all ages, the intermediate artist looking to expand their skills and working artists looking to reinforce skills under the watchful eyes of seasoned, award winning teaching professionals. The Art School's growing curricula offers thousands of studio sessions each year to enjoy.

Offerings for young people include classes such as ceramics and pottery, art exploration, comic drawing, fashion, and anime drawing.

Click here for more info about classes!

SKETCHING AT THE GALLERIES

All are welcome to slow down, look closely, and draw inspiration from the art around you. Sketching in the Galleries invites visitors of all ages to pick up complimentary drawing materials and sketch at their own pace. This is a drop-in program, no preregistration required.
