I’ve learned my business is supposed to be “nimble and agile” and that includes the EGuide (being on brand etc.). I guess it reflects the editor. Interpret either way you choose.

Just in case you missed the last edition, here is a link to it for you

T A 21-year-old college student worked at a Texas hotel for 32 hours alone during a flood. Guests say he's a hero (CNN)
Many of you probably already saw this, but I think it is a great story. And he needs to be in hospitality, because what he has cannot be taught…

' Please come and visit:' Unscathed Bahamas islands need visitors to aid hurricane recovery USA TODAY

As many of you know, I am teaching a “CMP at Sea” class to the Bahamas in January. We are working on how we can do something additional to help…
The most important thing the world can do to help the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian is pay the island nation a visit.

Castle Hot Springs, Arizona's First Wellness Resort, to Reopen After 43 Years Travel + Leisure

Oooooo….that sums it up…looks like a great place for a business retreat, or small incentive.
Closed since 1976, Castle Hot Springs, Arizona’s first luxury resort, will reopen Oct. 7 after major renovations.

Amtrak CEO Sees Short-Haul Flight Hassles as Fuel for the Railway’s Turnaround (Skift)

I love trains and actually have done some long trips on Amtrak, one as recently as two years ago…I would love to see our train system rise up to be competitive with what other countries do. Also, if you saw the article a couple of issues ago, people are beginning to emphasize using trains over planes, for shorter trips, especially in Europe. It is also less damaging to the environment, which is where the push is really coming from.

How to Tip Around the World Travel Channel

I wonder how much we talk about, worry about and argue about tipping? With our friends, family, significant other? Wouldn’t it be nice if there really was a definitive answer?
Tipping can be a controversial topic, since whether or not you should tip, and how much, depends on who you ask.

What Colleges and Universities do you know, worldwide, that offer degrees and certificates in our industry? Meetings, events, tourism, hospitality?

Please send me information on your college or one you live near, or even one you know of for other reasons. I am beginning to compile a good list---frequently these are hard to find because they are concentrations in a program that is not obvious. The more information the better—what degrees? Associates, Bachelors, Masters, Doctorates and PhDs (can be different before someone shoots me off a note), Links are helpful, and if you are/were a student there—tell me about it! Thanks!

Clothing, Packing, Travel

My new favorite travel item—for women and men.
Moleskin. What the heck is moleskin? I actually don’t know, so it is easier to tell you how to use it. It is adhesive on one side, and soft and a little “fuzzy” or “furry” on the other. You can either stick it to your feet, or your shoes, to keep areas from rubbing sore places on your feet. I now carry it with me in my suitcase. Even what I consider comfortable shoes (I’m pretty picky about comfort), have been improved. Very inexpensive---I bought mine at the drugstore. I know it’s been around for years, but it was something I would hear from “old” people. Maybe this is a sign I’m old….

I may not want or need all 31, but definitely eyeing some. Really need to be the one to think of some of these things!

The newest carry-on bags do more with less room: How to get all your gear in a smaller bag

I really don’t think I will ever be able to fit a months worth of clothes in a carry on—especially one so small, it fits under the seat. Nope. Not going to happen. Maybe for you?

Now –your friends and family have the opportunity to help you move forward. Yep—I now have gift cards. They can be applied to anything I provide. It may not be as glamorous as a piece of jewelry, or as delicious as a drink at your favorite coffee place---but it will help you get to where you want to go.

5th Annual Meeting Planner Workshop - University of Florida

I'll be presenting this session

Are you relatively new to meeting planning? Or a seasoned meeting planner, whose been planning meetings for awhile and for the most part nothing big goes wrong. But maybe you’re thinking “Is there anything more? Have we done the best that can be done?” How can we create the “optimum learning environment” for our attendees—without blowing the budget?

ALL THINGS CMP

My Two-Day Intensive Class

Did you know you can earn 16 Continuing Education hours to apply or re-certify for your CMP by attending? Yes, it is framed around the CMP Domains, but it will also show you how to be better at what you do---or want to do.

I make a decision 2-3 weeks before the class is held as to whether there is enough registration to hold the class. If you know you are taking it please register before those dates! If I am holding the class and there is still room, I will continue to take registrations. What I hate is when I cancel a class do to registration numbers and then people contact me going “I was going to take it!”.

All Classes are Saturday and Sunday.

In 2020 the registration fee will be increasing from $550 to $600. Some classes have discounts, depending on who is sponsoring.

"If I could do it all over again,I would have started with Joanne first! Joanne was wonderful in assisting in my studies and quest for my CMP. Without her tips and advice, I would have not had the confidence to pass the exam.

Career and Jobs - They are not the same!

A deceptively simple way to find more happiness at work
The New York Times

Yes, you can take more control of your work life….

You don’t need to change everything about your job to see major benefits. A few changes here and there can be all you need.

Need a college degree to get a job? These companies say skills matter more NBC News

Many people in meetings, events and hospitality started without a college degree and moved up. Then they frequently reach a wall, because they can’t check that box…does 20 years of experience count for something?

A growing movement, including employers and training groups, is focusing on workers' skills rather than their level of education.

If you are on this list you probably heard me present on the meetings and events industry (good chance on the CMP exam) but no, you did not ask to be on this list because the list did not exist till now. If you choose to unsubscribe I totally get it. On the other hand if you stick around there might be something interesting, amusing or maybe even both .
