Historical Tidbit: EB's Youth Hostel
Part 3
EB's First Parish Unitarian Church opened a Youth Hostel in 1970 when Reverend Rich brought a transcontinental Canadian Pullman car to the church property. Hostelling, International (HI) was founded in 1932. It is the largest hostel network in the world with 61 Member Associations operating over 3,000 hostels in 59 countries.
A few weeks ago, I ran into Cyrus Comninos, manager of the First Church's Hostel between October of 1980 and October of 1987.
Here is Part 3 : Cyrus's Memorable Stories.
"The weekend in 1984 when a commercial was filmed at the Train Hostel on the 50th anniversary of American Youth Hostel. On that weekend three different youth groups ...from New York, Massachusetts, and Washington DC...became part of the television ad."
"A Quaker School from Philadelphia, and a Pennsylvania track team who came for many years in a row in order to participate in an Archdiocese track meet in Boston."
"Two different couples met at the hostel and subsequently married: John Allen, a bicycle expert and translator of books and Ellie, a math teacher, and Kieran O 'Malley from County Mayo, (Ireland), a future auto engineer and Kate, a hostel houseparent who is now a communication specialist for a New England University"
"Finally a visitor from England, John Forshaw, who worked on a 2000 acre estate for a lord in Braemore England and who stayed at the hostel in order to research New England Industrial Museums. John was an antique industrial machine Museum curator on the estate. I introduced him to Don Randall from Halifax MA who helped John find more museums where he could do his research."
Meeting Cyrus was a bit of serendipity, Universal Energy or the Holy Spirit, as we met by chance in a deli in Concord, MA on Patriot's Day. No mater what you call it, this was a fascinating piece of EB history, showing how a bit of hospitality can bring people together, and I am honored to be able to share it with you.

Climate Can-Do: Bay State Bike Month
From the Berkshires to the Cape, and everywhere around and in between, riders across Massachusetts are celebrating Bay State Bike Month this May! Sunday, May 7th, was National Ride a Bike Day, and May 15th–19th is Bike to Work Week. Visit Bay State Bike Month website to find an event or register your bike - friendly event.
There are so many benefits to riding a bike, both for your health and the environment’s. Bicycles are a pollution-free mode of transport, use minimal fossil fuels, and reduce your carbon footprint! Cyclists decrease the need for the constant construction of roadways, allowing there to be more greenery than concrete. Riding a bike is also a great way to get in some exercise, giving you the serotonin boost you need to start your day! Let this be your inspiration to leave those car keys on the table, grab your bike, and enjoy a beautiful May day with the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, and your pedal to the metal.
Bay State Bike Month is supported by MassBike, a non-profit dedicated to making bicycling an integral part of human-centered communities, policies, culture, and infrastructure. Healthy, resilient communities embrace lifestyles consistent with safe and rewarding environments. To build and sustain these environments, MassBike advocates for policies that encourage and support community wellness, equity, and inclusion, enable sustainable growth, drive economic vitality, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It's For the Birds!
With all of the lovely chirping that greets each new spring day, it's time to give tribute to our feathery companions.
"The bird is powered by its own life and by its motivation." ~ A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
"It's best to have failure happen early in life. It wakes up the Phoenix bird in you so you rise from the ashes." ~ Anne Baxtera
"The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Whoever will be born must destroy a world." ~ Hermann Hesse
"God gives every bird its food, but He does not throw it into its nest." ~ Josiah Gilbert Holland

Once, I came home from high school and found a dead pheasant and shattered glass all over my bed. So determined on his course was he, that he ran through my ground floor window. I don't know what the Universe was trying to tell me. I didn't know back then how to listen. That's one heck of a dropped call! ~ Jacquie
