SHOE DRIVE: Soles for Souls | |
Seeking donations for men, women and children
Three years ago, we had a very successful shoe drive, and we were able to donate 80 plus pairs of shoes to the Salvation Army in Santa Monica, thanks to Elizabeth Coombs–and everyone at St. Bede’s.
So, we thought we’d try it again!
For the next several weeks, we will be collecting donations of practical, everyday shoes and clean, gently-used shoes for men, women and children. We are reaching out to various organizations to ask if they have targeted needs (men’s boots in large sizes for men, for example, or sneakers for women in wide sizes).
We’ve also asked for shoe sizes for our six Sacred Resistance families, which have 20 plus children among them.
Please be on the lookout for collection bins in the narthex.
Questions? Please reach out to members of the Mission Committee.
Thank you!

Exploring the Liturgy with How2charist
In the Episcopal Church, we do a lot of pew aerobics – standing, sitting, kneeling – during a worship service. Ever wondered about the “what and why" behind it? Join us Wednesday evenings at 8pm after the Midweek Service for a 4-week series featuring How2charist, a unique digital instructed Eucharist. This engaging video curriculum uses on-screen graphics, historical facts, and clear narration to guide us step-by-step through our liturgy. Over four weeks, we will explore the history, beauty, and deep symbolism of the Rite II Eucharistic service from The Book of Common Prayer. Whether you are new to the Episcopal Church or have been sitting in the pews for decades, this interactive series will bring fresh meaning to your worship experience. Bring your questions and a friend!

| | THE PARTY OF PARTIES IS COMING! | Susan Holder and Danny Rodriquez show off their new St. Bede's Holy Roller aprons as they prepare to make a couple of batches of communion bread dough. Photo: Elizabeth Coombs | |
Thanks to the generosity of parishioner Danny Rodriquez, we now have beautiful new “Holy Roller” aprons. Any parishioner who works in the St. Bede’s kitchen, whether you’ve been a Holy Roller or not, is invited to wear one. Danny joined the Holy Rollers a few months ago and is having so much fun helping to make our communion bread. She brings skills, knowledge from her background in cooking, strength (it takes muscles to weave all the flour into the dough) and fun to our effort.
Danny said that she started her cooking journey at a young age, starting with making tamales. Her grandmother’s gigantic round table served as the setting for all the ladies of the family to gather round at Christmas time. While Danny wasn’t able to participate until she was 21, since cocktails were passed around as the tamales were being made, she was able to watch and learn.
Danny also learned a lot about cooking from her mom who was a chef with her own catering business featuring Mexican food. In addition, the mother of Danny’s children graduated from the Scottdale Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and became a pastry chef. For nearly a year Danny accompanied her on a Disney cruise where her spouse made all the pastries and Danny learned a lot of baking tricks as well as how to make delicious sautés, sauces out of wines and other really good dishes.
What both Susan & Danny like most about being a Holy Roller is being able to hang out together. Also, Danny said it means a lot to her to serve her heavenly Father as she helps make God’s bread. Finally, Danny said, “It makes me feel part of the community to help make something in which most parishioners partake.”
Thank you again, Danny, for the high-quality aprons you have gifted to St. Bede’s. You are such a bright spirit among us!

Interfaith Pilgrimage to Protest ICE Detention Centers
An interfaith group of faith leaders and activists completed an 8-day, 96-mile pilgrimage from the Adelanto ICE Detention Center in the Mojave Desert to the Metropolitan Detention Center and Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles to protest extreme conditions in immigration detention facilities. Organized by CLUE, the Jewish organization Nefesh LA and the EDLA’s Sacred Resistance and led by Rev. Jennifer Gutierrez (Executive Director of CLUE) and Rev. Canon Jamie Edwards-Acton of St. Stephen’s Hollywood, the marchers faced extreme desert heat reaching over 105 degrees Fahrenheit while highlighting reports that at least 58 people have died in ICE custody since January 2025, including 4 deaths at the Adelanto facility. The group called for the closure of all immigration detention facilities (specifically targeting Adelanto), accountability for wrongful deaths in custody and an end to mass deportations.

The Sisters of Bede book cart is an excellent resource not only for our congregation but for the groups that use our facilities. In exchange for books, the reader leaves a free-will offering. The money collected is added to the funds donated by the Sisters to the NYA.
We depend on donations of your unneeded books to stock our carts. We especially need: mysteries (our most popular), general fiction (including romance), and general nonfiction. You can leave them next to the book carts in the parish hall.

CLUE - Supporting Immigration Work:
Dear friends,
Many of you have shown concern about new immigration policies and how they will impact this vulnerable population among us here in Los Angeles. Below is information about how you can get involved through CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice), an organization that St. Bede's works with and supports.
Blessings,
Rev. Jennifer+
At the core of nearly every faith tradition lies the concept of a just, harmonious, and loving society where all souls are valued and everyone can thrive.
It is unconscionable that people fleeing violence in other countries would be deported back to those places, regardless of threats to their safety and security.
Because the Trump Administration is threatening immigrant communities across the country (regardless of documentation status), CLUE is working across Southern California to protect immigrant workers and their families in a variety of important ways.
You can join us in this work or support it with your donations knowing that you are doing your part to protect vulnerable people.
RAPID RESPONSE NETWORKS
If you see ICE Activity anywhere you go, you can report it to the Rapid Response hotlines in your area.
- Los Angeles: 888-624-4752
- Orange County: 714-881-1558
- San Bernardino/Riverside: 909-361-4588
- Kern County: 661-432-2230
- Central Valley: 559-206-0151
CLUE is working with RRN partners to offer ongoing trainings for faith leaders and community members who want to show up for workers and families being targeted by ICE. If you want to be trained to be a rapid responder and you live in Orange County, Los Angeles or the Inland Empire, contact Sithy Bin at sbin@cluejustice.org.
Thank you for standing in intimate solidarity as we seek to build a society where everyone is safe and lives with dignity.

Congregations invited to experiment with sixth baptismal promise emphasizing care of creation
By David Paulsen
A central component of the liturgy for baptisms in The Episcopal Church is the Book of Common Prayer’s Baptismal Covenant, in which congregations make five theological promises to act in Christian ways “with God’s help.”
Some congregations are adding a sixth promise to the Baptismal Covenant, acknowledging their responsibility to care for God’s earthly creation.
“The church is moving more and more toward allowing experimentation in many areas, including this one,” Terry DeLisio, a lay leader in the Diocese of Chicago, told Episcopal News Service. She is helping to coordinate the northern Illinois diocese’s implementation of an expanded Baptismal Covenant in congregations that wish to try it.
