Celebrating 10 Years as a Privately-Funded Library
     Open to the Public!

Join us at our Annual Book and Plant Sale
               on July 13th to Celebrate.

By Dinah Wolff, President

As we move toward warmer weather, our activity level is ramping up. In conjunction with our Annual Book and Plant Sale on July 13th, we plan to celebrate a decade of independent operation as a privately-funded library open to the public. In addition to the usual plants, books, CDs, and DVDs, "there'll be snacks, giveaways, and more", according to someone involved in the planning. Please plan on joining us.

Duncan Oliver and John Shea, Co-Chairs of our Program Committee, have brought us a number of interesting and well-attended events in recent months, among them a visit from the Cape Cod Genealogical Society, and a talk by Teresa Carter about the Register's and the Barnstable Patriot's digitization project and its facilitation of historical and genealogical research.

Because of high interest and participation last year, we again scheduled a talk by John Vaughn from CapeSave, which provides a free home heat loss assessment, free replacement of incandescent light bulbs, and best of all, a minimum of 75% off the total cost of adding insulation to your home. Contact John at 508-398-0398 to schedule a visit, and please mention the library to him (it matters).

Julian Cyr, our State Senator, held Office Hours in the library early in May, answering questions from his constituents, both in a group context, but also in one-on-one private meetings. At least 25 people attended, some from other towns (Brewster, Harwich), an unusually good turn-out, according to his assistant.

Lynn Lesperance continues to offer special children's programming (Story Hour, Music with Denya), and upon occasion, reading with dogs (worth seeing!). The very popular monthly Book Club led by Leslie Altman will meet on June 20th, and then resume in September. Knitters will not meet again until September 16th.

Watch your email for Constant Contact notifications about upcoming events, and check our website: yarmouthportlibrary.org to see what's going on.

Yarmouth Port Library Celebrates
     10 Years of Independent Operation!

YPL's Independence Day - Help us celebrate on July 13th!

We'll have snacks, giveaways, and more!

Why we are independent

In 2008, due to serious cuts in the Town Library budget, the Yarmouth Port Library faced closure. Working with the Town Library Director, the Trustees negotiated to keep the library open on a reduced basis until the end of Fiscal Year 2009. On July 1, 2009, the library became an independent, privately-funded public library.

Now, a decade later, the library continues to offer "more than just books for readers young and old."

Help us commemorate this remarkable achievement on Saturday, July 13th in conjunction with the Annual Book & Plant Sale.

YPL - A Family Fun Destination

All this and fun, too! Come in soon - and often!

By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian

Summer is coming. Bet you thought it would never get here, right? We love the hustle and bustle of our summer visitors and can't wait to see you.

Just for YA readers:  This summer AudiobookSync.com is offering readers aged 13 through 18 two free audiobooks per week to help get that Summer Reading requirement done. Go to: audiobooksync.com, sign up, download the OverDrive app (if you don't already have it) and you're ready to go. The program started May 2nd so get in there and get two free audiobooks each week through the summer. They'll be yours to keep!

Family Fun & New Toys: We're hoping that you will make YPL one of your family fun destinations. We will have different things going on that you can just drop in for - Legos, crafts, games - and we're adding new toys (see below). We recently got some town buildings and vehicles through a grant from The Early Childhood Resource Center which is a grant sponsored by the Massachusetts  Department of Early Education and Care. They, and we, believe in sharing resources to help promote early literacy and family engagement through library networks.

Bringing in your children - or grandchildren - gives them something new and novel to play with as well as opportunities to use their imagination and develop early literacy competencies such as narrative skills and building vocabulary.

Children's Room Wish List

Why not donate a toy for the cause!

By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian

We're upping our game in the Children's Room!

Studies have shown that imaginative play increases a child's vocabulary, problem solving, and other pre-literacy skills. Plus, it allows families to come to the library to play together, strengthening family bonds and creating social ones.

To that end, we are purchasing some new items. Since we cannot afford everything on our Wish list, we are sharing our YPL Children's Room Wish list with all of you. If you want to contribute to the educational and emotional welfare of our young patrons, why not donate a toy for the cause?

Don't forget to use Amazon Smile for Yarmouth Port Library when you check out. That way the library gets a little something to spend on the other patrons!

Thanks to all of you. Stop by soon and see how we're coming along.

Greetings From Your Community Library!
     What's New?

We have some news to share and hope to make your
               library experience better than ever.

EMagazines Available: First, as you may know, OverDrive now offers electronic magazines. Although we subscribe to quite a few magazines ourselves, subscriptions are expensive and our storage space is limited. The CLAMS consortium has purchased 50 emagazines for your reading pleasure. You can find them in the catalog by going to OverDrive. The link to OverDrive is on the CLAMS catalog page. There you can find Gardens Illustrated, PC magazine, Esquire, and lots more! If you have suggestions for emagazines for future purchase by CLAMS, just let us know.

Reciprocity: As you may also know, OverDrive now provides a Reciprocal Lending Agreement with other libraries in Eastern Massachusetts. This agreement allows CLAMS public library cardholders to use OverDrive resources at the other networks. At this time active members, in addition to CLAMS, include CW MARS, Minuteman, NOBLE, OCLN, SAILS and the Boston Public Library. If you are frustrated by long wait times for ebooks, try borrowing from another library consortium.

There are two apps for your smart devices that allow patrons to use this offering, the Libby and the OverDrive app. The process for borrowing is similar on both apps. Both Libby and OverDrive can be found on the CLAMS website. After you install the app, you will need to select the app you want and then follow the prompts. You will need your library card bar code and pin number, to sign in.

The number of checkouts and holds follows the rules for each network, not the home network. If you like, bring in your device and we can help you with the process.

Homebound Delivery: One more way we want to be of service: YPL is now offering Homebound Delivery. We have a small group of dedicated volunteers who can deliver books from YPL to you and return them for you. If you know of someone who is homebound, even for a short time, or may have trouble getting to and from the YPL, please let us know and we can help!

NewFlag: Finally, you may have noticed our new flag. Kay and Jim Kaiser donated the flag, in honor and in memory of Edward Kaiser. We thank them for thinking of us.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Thursday, June 20th at 2 PM.
(YPL Book Club will resume  Thursday, September 19th.)

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl.

But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life - until the unthinkable happens.

New members are always welcome.
Come meet new friends and enjoy lively conversations.

Remembering Charles and Carolyn Gale

"The Gales represented the best of
                 what it means to volunteer."

By Anne Cifelli

Longtime Trustee Charles Gale passed away on March 17th. Charles was a leader, mentor, and friend. During his decades of service to the Library, Charles volunteered on the Finance Committee, led Buildings & Grounds, and was the chief greeter at the library during the Christmas Stroll. He could always be counted upon to do what needed to be done-emptying the book drop, shoveling the walkways, trimming the shrubs-no task was too small. Charles's dedication was surpassed only by his kindness. He gave wonderful hugs, excellent advice, and incredible support to our organization.

Charles was predeceased by his wife Carolyn, who died last year. Carolyn also served on the Board of Trustees. For years, she chaired the library's Historic Books and Documents Committee, faithfully preserving the library's institutional memory. Her unparalleled knowledge of library history and unwavering commitment to the library made her an invaluable (and irreplaceable) asset. Like her husband, Carolyn was whip smart, outspoken, and always willing to help.

The Gales represented the best of what it means to volunteer. They gave generously of their time and their many talents. Their steadfast belief in the library guided us through difficult times, including the library's independence from the Town Library system ten years ago. They will be missed.

Recently, the Yarmouth Port Library Association voted to create a reading nook in memory of the Gales. It will be located in a quiet back corner (formerly home to oversize books) with a lovely window overlooking the hydrangeas.

Contributions to this project can be made to the Yarmouth Port Library (Attn: Gale Memorial), 297 Main Street, Yarmouth Port, MA 02675.

Varied Programs at YPL!

The programs at YPL are interesting and well-attended!

State Senator Julian Cyr held office hours at the library to meet with constituents on Friday, May 3rd. Constituents were invited to come by and share concerns, discuss issues or seek assistance on matters involving state government.

Local resident and NASA astronaut, Daniel C. Burbank (Captain, USCG, Ret.), spoke to a standing room only crowd on May 11th about his experiences in the space program.

Be sure to check the YPL website
for up-to-date program information.

Thank you to all YPL contributors.

As a privately funded public library, the Yarmouth Port Library does not receive funding from the Town of Yarmouth. The Yarmouth Port Library Association raises funds through private donations, grants, bequests, and other gifts. Your donations provide the operating funds we need to stay open today and in the future.

Thank you to all our generous donors! Because of you YPL is a vital member of the community.
