Our Garden Blooms Because of YOU!
Because of YOU, we have made a difference in the lives of 800+ older adults who struggle to make ends meet. This past year, we’re grateful to the hundreds of volunteers, community partners, donors and other supporters that helped us provide prepared meals and bag of groceries, healthcare services and wellness check-ups, physical activities, technology and English classes and numerous celebrations and parties to all who call Fellowship House home.

Never Stop Learning
Many of us don’t think twice about accessing information online – whether bill paying, making restaurant reservations, meeting with our doctor, or watching a TV show. We often forget what the world is like when we’re not connected to the internet.

It’s not surprising that many seniors view the internet as complicated and intimidating.

Since the COVID pandemic, we have invested heavily in getting our residents online. For example, we offer a free Google Nest Hub to each Fellowship House resident. Many are thrilled to have a new smart device — attending trainings, setting up their Gmail accounts, and using the Hub for music, phone calls and getting the daily weather. With proper education, a smartphone connected to the internet can be a powerful tool that enhances a senior’s life experience by providing connection, entertainment and organization.

These learning opportunities are only possible because of the many volunteers who are willing to teach classes and give step-by-step instructions to residents who may be interfacing with a smart device for the first time.

It’s clear from a recent article that technology literacy is becoming a crucial part of healthy aging. We want to be sure the residents who call Fellowship House home – and those in years to come – can easily access information, keep in touch with friends and family and take advantage of all the conveniences we enjoy from the tap of a screen or a voice command.

If you, your company, school or organization would like to spend some time volunteering in this important role, please reach out! Teaching seniors about one of the most important developments in history can provide many rewards to you and to them for many years to come.

With gratitude,

Did You Know with a large question mark
Just 14% of older adults living alone could afford a daily visit from a home health aide, according to a Harvard analysis across 97 metro areas.

Only 13% could afford to move into assisted living without dipping into assets.

AN INTERN'S PERSPECTIVE
Nutrition As We Age

Nutrition plays an important role in both our physical and mental well-being, influencing our ability to complete daily tasks as well as our cognitive functions. As we age, maintaining good nutritional health becomes increasingly important, as we become more at risk for diseases and illnesses.

According to the Administration for Community Living, nearly half of older Americans suffer from malnutrition. Malnutrition as an older adult can come with serious consequences such as a weak immune system, resulting in being prone to illnesses and diseases, muscle weakness, and cognitive decline. At Fellowship Square, we are committed to addressing this issue in our communities through various programs, wellness seminars, and the gracious contributions of our community partners, all of which are essential to our success. The Fellowship Fresh program ensures that residents receive donated meals and fresh food each week. Thanks to donors like the USDA Capital Area Food Bank, Panera Bread, Cornerstones, Whole Foods, Alexander Baptist Church, Reston Association, and Lake Ridge Rotary Club, as well as the dedication of over 132 volunteers who package and deliver food directly to each resident, we can effectively address this pressing issue.
