NUNAVUT DAY - JULY 9

Dear Friends of Indigena

July 9 is Nunavut Day in Canada - the day the people of Nunavut celebrate their new Territory each year.  Nunavut was first created as a Territory in April 1999; however, when two new acts were passed by the Canadian Parliament on July 9, 1993, (the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act and the Nunavut Act), this date became the official date. This year marks the 30th anniversary.

Nunavut is divided into three regions: Qikiqtaaluk, Kivalliq and Kitikmeot.

Map of Nunavut

The region of Qikiqtaaluk (previously known as Baffin Island) includes Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut. Kivalliq region includes the area to the west of Hudson Bay (formerly known as the Keewatin). Kangiqtiniq (Rankin Inlet) is the capital.

Kitikmeot region includes the areas to the South and East of Victoria Island and reaches to the Boothia Peninsula. Kitikmeot's capital is Ikaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay).

In honour of Nunavut Day, we are featuring works from some of the 25 Arctic communities in Nunavut. Gallery Indigena is proud to have supported Inuit artists for over 50 years and we thank you for your continued commitment to support indigenous artists.

Enjoy Nunavut Day!
