Simchat Torah Event, Saturday Oct. 3
Simchat Torah means "rejoicing in the Torah." The celebration occurs when the year-long cycle of weekly Torah reading finishes Deuteronomy and continues with the beginning of Genesis, showing that reading Torah never ends.
This is an opportunity to get close and personal with the Torah. This year participants will pull a Torah portion out of a hat, and we will pick out something meaningful which can be your "Torah inspiration" for the coming year.
We will meet at Beit Yichud, 6932 N Glenwood in Rogers Park, at 7:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served. There is metered street parking and there is a Red Line stop nearby.

October 4: Book Club
The World to Come by Dara Horn is the story of the theft of a Chagall painting from a museum. The thief is a young Jewish man who is a quiz show writer who believes the painting once hung in his parents' living room in Russia. The theft opens many philosophical questions about the family history of the main character and questions about life in general. He learns that the world we create by our own choices and actions becomes our world to come.
We will meet Sunday morning October 4, 10:30 AM, at a home in the Hollywood Park area of Chicago (near NEIU). Write to Joan Minsky, minsky@aol.com, to RSVP or for more information: chicagomakom@gmail.com

Our next Rosh Chodesh Affiliation Group meeting will take place via Zoom on Sunday, October 11, at 3:00 pm. It will be close to the beginning of the month of Cheshvan, the only month without any holidays. Cheshvan is a month of reflection.

Our thanks to Felicia Kaplan for reconstructing the prayer books that are used at Friday night Shabbat services during the summer in the park. The ones in use got very worn and had frayed and missing pages.
Felicia got 30 new binders in 4 beautiful colors, had the pages reprinted, and put them all together. We now have new prayer books for the Friday night services at the beach. Thank you, Felicia, for your labor of love.

Feeding the Needy
In these difficult times, as we're trying to normalize after a government shut-down when SNAP benefits were paused, there is a way we can help the needy. Broadway United Methodist Church has some shelves at the front door that serve as a food pantry. Non perishable items that are left on the shelf will be of great help to the community.
Suggested items: canned meat or other protein items (tuna, salmon, chicken), crackers, peanut butter, canned soups and stews, canned fruits and vegetables, canned beans, pasta, rice, olive oil or Canola oil, powdered milk, spices (salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion salt, oregano, etc.), granola bars, applesauce, nuts, instant mashed potatoes.
Items to Skip: items that have to be refrigerated, items with glass packaging, items that need can openers or other special equipment to open (pop-top cans are the best!), items that require too many extra ingredients, items that are expired, items that are homemade or have already been opened.

Parking in the west lot can ONLY be accessed from Buckingham Place. It has limited space. DO NOT use the lot north of the church to avoid a ticket and/or being towed. There is also metered street parking. SpotHero can be a useful tool in this area. The Broadway #36 bus stops at the front door.
