LAST WEEK

DISCHARGE AND INSTALLATION BREAKFAST

Opening Exercises

Last week was our annual discharge and installation breakfast. Weston Girl Scouts with leader Kristen Abreu opened the meeting with presentation of the colors, leading us in The Pledge of Allegiance, and performance of The Star Spangled Banner.

After Breakfast

Steve Thomas interrupted Harry before the festivities started with a customized gift for our retiring president.

Harry presented Dave Burns, Steve Thomas and Frank Ferrara with the first Presidential Freedom Awards. Harry called out these members for, not always freedom, but with occasional cajoling or arm twisting, always being counted upon to get the job done.

District Board Member Officiating

After breakfast and happy bucks, Patrick Tokarz, Lieutenant Governor of Division 17 of the Kiwanis New England and Bermuda District officiated in the discharge and installation of board members.

In the Kiwanis, the board is comprised of the officers and directors. In Weston, we have both a club and a foundation, both legal entities and each with a board. Directors and officers serve one-year terms beginning October 1, and last week we celebrated the 2025/2026 board members retiring, or being discharged with gratitude, having completed their elected terms and welcomed those being installed, returning or beginning a new, 2026/2027 term.

Discharged with Gratitude

Club and foundation directors completing their service are John Moran, and Lisa Wexler, club, foundation secretary Jim McMorris, foundation immediate past president Steve Thomas, President Harry Spencer.

Continuing Board Members

Board members continuing for the next year are club and foundation director Frank Ferrara, club and foundation treasurer Dan Lerner, and club secretary Bob Uzenoff.

Directors and Officers Installed

Board members installed and beginning new terms are club and foundation directors Lila Brier and Geoff Hollander, foundation secretary Steve Haas, Immediate Past President Harry Spencer, and President Lance Mald.

Harry presented Lance with what Harry represented as a carefully selected Hawaiin shirt from his curated personal collection. Lance wasn't buying it; spied a laundry tag on the shirt apologizing saying "We tried our best."

In an unplanned coincidence, Lance reciprocated, presenting Harry with what Lance described as a brand new Tommy Bahama shirt.

Lance concluded the meeting speaking of his vision and aspirations for his term, including Kiwanis leading in facilitation giving and service in Weston including using a Facebook group (as opposed to a page) to cfacilitate recruitment and collaboration of like-minded individuals.
