Hank & Frank Bicycles Announces Retirement After 101 Years of Community Service
After more than a century of serving Bay Area riders, families, and generations of cycling enthusiasts, Hank & Frank Bicycles has announced that it will officially retire and close its doors on August 31, 2026.
Founded in 1925, Hank & Frank has been a trusted local institution for 101 years and has
been stewarded by only two families throughout its history. When Dale Dryer took over the
business from Hank 57 years ago, he continued a tradition rooted in craftsmanship,
honesty, personal service, and care for the community.
For generations, the shop has helped customers find more than bicycles. Hank & Frank has
helped people discover freedom, confidence, connection, adventure, and joy on two
wheels. From a child’s first bike to a family’s weekend ride, from daily commuters to
lifelong cyclists, the shop’s purpose has remained the same: to serve every rider with
respect, guidance, and care they can trust.
Hank & Frank began on East 14th Street in Oakland, moved through several locations over
the decades, and has proudly called the City of Lafayette home for the past 52 years. The
shop has watched children grow up on its bikes and return years later with children of their
own, creating a legacy shaped by relationships as much as by repairs, sales, and service.
“Our gratitude is difficult to put into words,” said the Hank & Frank Team. “This community
has trusted us with milestones, memories, and everyday moments for more than a century.
We hope every customer knows that our work has always been about people first—helping
families, neighbors, and riders feel cared for, confident, and connected.”
As the shop prepares for its final season, the team looks forward to wishing Frank a joyful
and well-earned next chapter. Hank & Frank is also actively seeking the right person to
carry on its extraordinary legacy and will keep the community informed as that search
continues.
