This is From the Archives, where we present something from our extensive collection of archival photos, records and all manner of materials dating back to when the church was First Methodist Episcopal, to First Methodist, to Church of the Savior, to St. Paul's to Crossroads.
We look back this week on how the Church of the Savior congregation marked the occasion of Maundy Thursday in April of 1971.
That year, they presented the Living Dramatization of the Last Supper by Ernest Krikor Emurian, who was a prolific hymn writer, published author and Methodist minister in Virginia.
As you can see from the program, this dramatization is a series of monologues/dialogues between the Disciples, Jesus and a narrator, interspersed with music.
(There are versions of this you can watch on YouTube if you like, though no guarantees are made as to the quality of those productions.)
There are many ways this church has worshipped on Maundy Thursday. For instance, for many years, Church of the Savior had a tradition of stripping the Chancel with a full phalanx of acolytes and clergy, with some very dramatic underscoring music from organ and timpani.
This year, we are taking the elements of the Maundy Thursday service - the Last Supper and the Stripping of the Altar - and putting them into a combined Passion Sunday service. (Click to open a PDF in a new window.)
