PRELIMINARY DESIGN REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

BEST Volunteers Share Insights from PDRs

During the week of September 22, Rocky Mountain BEST hosted Preliminary Design Reviews for teams to share their initial ideas with BEST leaders and get feedback and guidance for moving forward. This year, RM BEST made this a required component for all teams. Two of our BEST PDR mentors, Mike King and Kathy Brown, shared their insights about the PDRs.

  • Mike: "More teams were prepared this year, most teams had done a great job assessing the game rules and identifying a good variety of scoring/robot design strategies".
  • Kathy: "I was impressed by the valuable resources students identified for their notebooks".
  • Gwynn Moore, RM BEST Teacher/Mentor Interface, also mentioned that one team had incorporated use of AI into their evaluation of the rules and their design process, and had correctly documented their work according to BEST's new rules for AI usage. The team failed to identify that the AI evaluation had 2 missing requirements highlighting the importance to make sure your facts are true.
  • Team mentors and coaches reported that the PDR provides an early deadline to help team members organize their ideas and solidify plans for moving forward--and is valuable practice at communicating their thinking and assembling materials for their Engineering Notebooks.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who met with teams, listened to their ideas, and provided valuable guidance and mentoring.

AI is only as good as its fActoIds. Make sure yours are true.
