Halifax Fire Cadet Program
Week 3 of the Halifax Fire Cadet Program!
This week, our cadets dove into pumps and hydraulics — essential skills for any firefighter. They learned how to tag and dress a hydrant, explored engine pump panels, and got a hands-on look at how a deck gun operates.
Repetition is key in the fire service, and it was awesome to see how each cadet improved with every evolution. Their growth and enthusiasm continue to impress us!

Historical Tidbit:
Halifax Military Responses
| |
June 7, 1777, the town of Halifax voted to give $150 for men to fill the quota, provided they enlisted for three years, or during the war. Among our Revolutionary soldiers was a slave owned by a prominent Halifax family. It is believed that he was given his freedom at the end of the war.
Among the "Haligonians" who served in the Continental Army were Nathaniel Holmes, James Tillson, Josiah Thompson, Prince Witherel, Consider Pratt, Holmes Sears, Zebediah Thompson, Joshua Farmer, Elisha Faxon, Joseph Tillson, and Richard Bosworth.
In 1812, the town furnished an entire military company, which was commanded by Captain Asa Thompson, popularly known as the "tall Captain." who was six feet, six inches in height. It is said that people would collect around South Boston Bridge to see him march his company over.
This company was the oldest in the State, chartered by John Hancock in 1792. It also served in the Civil War. It was one of the first organizations to respond to the call of President Lincoln, April 16, 1861.
Halifax suffered severely in the Civil War, losing twenty-four men of ninety-six volunteers. At that time, Halifax had a population of 739.
Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

Climate Can-Do: Keep the Environment Clean with How You Clean!
| |
We want to keep our homes clean, but we want to keep the environment – home to all living creatures – clean as well. We can do both by using cleaners with less toxic chemicals. These tips can help make your cleaning routines environmentally safer:
Avoid chemicals known to be harmful to skin or respiratory systems, such as ammonia in all-purpose cleaners, non-biodegradable chemicals in dish cleaners, and bleach in laundry cleaners. These chemicals are not only harmful to you but can spread and have harmful effects on the larger environment.
Look for safer alternatives you already have at home. Here are some examples:
- For all purpose cleaner, try vinegar or hot, soapy water on surfaces like counters and floors.
- For dish cleaner, try making “washing soda” by mixing baking soda and water together and baking the mixture in the oven.
- For laundry cleaner, use “washing soda” or borax instead of bleach.
Visit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website to find “Safer Choice-Certified” alternatives and keep an eye out for EPA’s “Safer Choice Label” when shopping for cleaning products.
Together, we can help make the environment cleaner by changing how we clean!

Taking the lead from Mother Earth, springing into re-birth.
Looking at our lives and thinking: what can I change to make life work better for me?
Could I eat cleaner (less chemical additives)?
Could I ncorporate exercises that are fun or fulfilling, so I actually DO them?
Could I use less chemicals and plastic in my life so I don't pollute my surroundings?
Could I stretch & center myself during the day so that I can start off in a calm and spiritually in-tune state of mind?
Could I look others in the eye and really listen to them, opening my heart to their concerns?
Whatever you choose, be kind to yourself. Each day we begin again, each day we get another chance to build the life we want.
