Hello!
I love these August days filled with the hum of the cicadas! I want to linger outside longer, eat more corn on the cob, and sweet watermelon. Squeeze in another 30 minutes to read in the backyard before the Fall chill comes tapping at the door. I hope you've been able to enjoy some of summer's sweet spots.

Our event with William Kent Krueger has been moved to a virtual event upon his request and our support. It's disappointing, but not surprising. The event date and time has changed to Thursday, September 2 at 7pm. We are co-hosting with our good friends at Boswell Book Company. We hope you will join us!

The Southeast Wisconsin Festival of Books will begin it's virtual programing this year with poet Margaret Rozga on Saturday, September 18 at 7pm. I'm looking forward to talking with Margaret about her poems and Alice in Wonderland!

This summer we have two booksellers who are returning to and beginning college. We say goodbye to Joe and Jewell and welcome Erica and Emma as our two new high school booksellers! It is always a joy to work with teenage booksellers and watch them hone their talents and discover new interests.

Cheers and Happy Reading!
Lisa with Katrina, Ken, Chloe, Genavieve, Toni, Kristen, Elisabeth, Beth, Jewell, Lynn, Judy, Sarah, Erica, and Emma

How about everything. You won’t put this story down, and you won’t forget Billy.
by Sarah Penner

Bookseller Judy says "Have you ever picked up a strange object and wondered the story behind it? Caroline on a solo trip to London finds herself in that position. Women helping women. Mystery. Magic. Revenge. The story keeps you reading breathless until the final sentence. A great read!" With crackling suspense, unforgettable characters and searing insight, The Lost Apothecary is a subversive and intoxicating debut novel of secrets, vengeance and the remarkable ways women can save each other despite the barrier of time.
by Nick McDonell

Bookseller Katrina says "This novel was a thought provoking and satirical fable that imagines what would happen if animals were in charge of the fate of humans. After a plague and man-made Calamity reduce the human population to a small number, the titular Council of Animals is voting to decide whether to help the humans or eat them. A baboon, bear, dog, and cat are the main members of this council and they have to make a decision soon. I enjoyed the humor and the interesting reversal of humans versus animals."

by Mirin Fader

The story of Giannis Antetokounmpo's extraordinary rise from poverty in Athens, Greece to super-stardom in America with the Milwaukee Bucks-becoming one of the most transcendent players in history and an NBA champion- from award-winning basketball reporter and feature writer at The Ringer Mirin Fader, touching on universal themes of family, immigration, hard work, wealth, loss, and dreaming big. Antetokounmpo has overcome unfathomable obstacles to become a symbol of hope for people all over the world, the personification of the American Dream. But his backstory remains largely untold, and Fader unearths new information about the childhood that shaped "The Greek Freak".
by Meg Lowman

Welcome to the eighth continent! Nicknamed the “Real-Life Lorax” by National Geographic, the biologist, botanist, and conservationist Meg Lowman—aka “CanopyMeg”—takes us on an adventure into the “eighth continent” of the world's treetops, along her journey as a tree scientist, and into climate action. A blend of memoir and fieldwork account, The Arbornaut gives us the chance to live among scientists and travel the world—even in a hot-air balloon! It is the engrossing, uplifting story of a nerdy tree climber—the only girl at the science fair—who becomes a giant inspiration, a groundbreaking, ground-defying field biologist, and a hero for trees everywhere.
by Siân Evans

During the early twentieth century, transatlantic travel was the province of the great ocean liners. It was an extraordinary undertaking made by many women, whose lives were changed forever by their journeys between the Old World and the New. Some traveled for leisure, some for work; others to reinvent themselves or find new opportunities. They were celebrities, migrants and millionaires, refugees, aristocrats and crew members whose stories have mostly remained untold—until now. Maiden Voyages is a fascinating portrait of these women as they crossed the Atlantic.

by Lucy Foley

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human. As the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes. And then someone turns up dead. Bookseller Toni says "What could go wrong with a wedding on a remote island? All the details are set for a perfect day. The bride a control freak. The groom an All American boy next door. Their family and friends gathered together for a weekend of love, happiness, and secrets"
by James Gould-Bourn

Danny’s life is falling apart. His eleven-year-old son, Will, hasn’t spoken since the death of his mother in a car crash a year earlier, and Danny has just been fired from his construction job. After observing street performers in a local park, Danny spends his last few dollars on a tattered panda costume, impulsively deciding to become a dancing bear. While performing one day, Danny spots his son being taunted by a group of older boys. Danny chases them off, and Will opens up for the first time since his mom died. Bookseller Genavieve says it's "A strange, but sweet novel about reconnecting- to each other and ourselves after loss. And about found family in unexpected places. A great comforting read!"
by Colleen Hoover

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true. Bookseller Jewell says "Lily leaves her twisted past and relationship with a homeless boy in Maine with her abusive father. She moves to Boston and meets a neurosurgeon. Everything is going great until it's not and Lily is forced to confront her painful past. This book is so good! I couldn't put it down!"

by Lucy Worsley

Take a trip back to Jane Austen's world and the many places she lived as historian Lucy Worsley visits Austen's childhood home, her schools, her holiday accommodations, the houses--both grand and small--of the relations upon whom she was dependent, and the home she shared with her mother and sister towards the end of her life. In places like Steventon Parsonage, Godmersham Park, Chawton House and a small rented house in Winchester, Worsley discovers a Jane Austen very different from the one who famously lived a "life without incident."
by Sara Seager

Sara Seager has always been in love with the stars: so many lights in the sky, so much possibility. Now a pioneering planetary scientist, she searches for exoplanets--especially that distant, elusive world that sustains life. But with the unexpected death of Seager's husband, the purpose of her own life becomes hard for her to see. Suddenly, at forty, she is a widow and the single mother of two young boys. For the first time, she feels alone in the universe.
by Kermit Pattison

A decade in the making, Fossil Men is a scientific detective story played out in anatomy and the natural history of the human body: the first full-length account of the discovery of a startlingly unpredicted human ancestor more than a million years older than Lucy. Based on a half-decade of research in Africa, Europe and North America, Fossil Men is not only a brilliant investigation into the origins of the human lineage, but the oldest of human emotions: curiosity, jealousy, perseverance and wonder.
