Ms. Bik Ng (pictured above) has shared her fond memories of Jasper.
My friend Jasper
I met Jasper White in 1985, when I was introduced to him by our mutual friend, chef Lydia Shire. He was the most generous, intelligent, talented and caring person I have ever known, and a great mentor to many chefs. Jasper’s selflessness extended to his family and friends – myself included – to whom he patiently gave advice and support. I have so many fond memories of Jasper, but I will treasure our culinary and cultural trip to China in 2000 most of all. Jasper involved me in the planning and organization of that trip, which was my honor. But it was particularly heartwarming to witness how much he loved everything about China, especially the cuisines of different Chinese provinces. His kindness toward the Asian communities and his curiosity about their cultures stood out for me. Jasper also helped launch the Asian American Diabetes Initiative (AADI) study which showed that Asian Americans have twice the risk for developing diabetes than general population. His doctor, Dr. Hsu, told him that this study needed more funding in order to be completed, so Jasper launched "A Taste of Ginger" fundraising event in 2005. I was so honored that he asked me to join him to plan this event. From 2005 to 2022, A "A Taste of Ginger" was an extraordinary annual event that raised thousands for this important cause. The many Asian Americans whose lives are better because of this important research may never know Jasper White, but he was their unsung hero who worked hard to make his community a better place. “Food is love,” read Jasper’s Summer Shack restaurant’s logo. Jasper White loved food almost as much as he loved people. And he will be missed by so many of us whose hearts he touched.
