MAYOR'S UPDATE

From the desk of Mayor Rika Levin

It was a busy week, starting with our inauguration ceremony on January 1 at the Community Center, followed that afternoon with the swearing-in of our Fire Chiefs.

As we begin 2025, I am thrilled to share with you our ambitious plans for the year ahead. Together with our staff, community partners, volunteers, and representatives at different levels of government, we are embarking on a path of bold projects and transformative initiatives that will shape the future of Ossining and strengthen our community for generations to come.

One of our core focuses will be the improvement of our Community Center. We’re committed to revitalizing this central space, making it a true gathering place for residents of all ages. From educational programs to recreational opportunities, our enhanced Community Center will be a cornerstone for connection and engagement.

In addition, we are expanding affordable housing options for seniors—a critical priority as we work to ensure that all residents have access to safe, affordable homes. By creating more housing opportunities, we will help our senior community stay rooted in Ossining, close to their families, friends, and the support networks they’ve built over the years.

We are also making a significant investment in our infrastructure, with targeted upgrades to our police and fire houses. These essential facilities will be modernized and strengthened to ensure that our first responders have the tools and resources they need to protect and serve our community.

These investments reflect our unwavering commitment to public safety and the well-being of every Ossining resident.

But our commitment to Ossining's future doesn't stop there. We are investing in our youth by expanding the services and reach of our Youth Bureau. In 2024, we served over 400 young people through an array of programs, and in 2025, we are committed to growing that number significantly. From after-school programs to leadership development, we will continue to provide our youth with the support, mentorship, and opportunities they need to thrive and succeed. The Village will also be continuing and growing its many arts and public, free, events for people of all ages.

We're also turning our attention to our beautiful waterfront area, which has incredible potential for revitalization. Significant improvements will be made to enhance this space, making it a more accessible and enjoyable area for all. Whether it's for recreation, leisure, or community events, the Ossining waterfront will be connected to investments in projects in the center of our downtown, drawing residents and visitors alike to enjoy its beauty and serenity.

As we move forward, these projects represent our collective vision for Ossining—a community that is inclusive, sustainable, and thriving. With these bold investments, we are laying the groundwork for a future where everyone has the opportunity to flourish and where our Village remains a place we're all proud to call our own.

2025 will be a year of bold action, meaningful improvements, and unwavering commitment to build while maintaining our greenspaces and upholding our legendary support for environmental spaces and health. I am excited for all that we will accomplish together in the months ahead, and I look forward to working alongside each and every one of you to bring these projects to life.

2025 also marks an exciting historical time for our Village. It is the kickoff year of Ossining 250, a celebration leading up to our nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. It is also the 200-year commemoration of Sing Sing Prison, an institution woven into our history. These anniversaries remind us of the legacy we are building for future generations, a legacy rooted in pride, progress, and purpose.

But we do not live on an island. While still an unknown at the local level, we will most likely experience changes as we navigate a time of transition at the federal and state government levels. These changes and mandates will likely affect many in our community. We remain deeply committed to supporting our immigrant population and addressing mental health challenges. Ossining's strength lies in its diversity and compassion.

I am grateful for all the insights and hard work that the entire Board of Trustees delivers to this community all 365 days. A big thank you to Deputy Mayor Omar Lopez, Trustee Bob Fritsche, and Trustee Dana White, and a warm welcome to Trustee Pat Yost.

Did you know that in the Ossining Fire Department, Chiefs typically change every two years as part of a traditional rotational system? This system is designed to share leadership responsibilities among the Department’s members and maintain fairness and equal opportunity for advancement. Chiefs are usually elected by the Department’s membership, and the two-year term allows for fresh leadership while ensuring continuity in operations and planning. This rotation helps balance experience with new perspectives, fostering strong leadership and teamwork.

I want to thank Michael T. Scarduzio, Jr. for his decades of volunteerism with the Ossining Fire Department, as well as congratulate Chief Engineer Louis Sanchez, 1st Assistant Chief Engineer Anthony Martinez, and 2nd Assistant Chief Engineer Joseph Rinaldi on their new positions.

This week’s Legislative Meeting (our annual Reorganization Meeting) will take place on Wednesday, January 8th at 7:30PM.
