SLYC After-Dinner Dance Party

We’re excited to invite you to an after-dinner party at the SLYC on Saturday, August 20, with drinks and dancing on the menu!

Similar to our opening social in July, we ask everyone to bring your own beverages of choice, which need to be kept and consumed on the premises of the Yacht Club building (we will have the area marked off). We’ll also have the Pavilion open for dancing!

The evening will run from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with all members welcome. To attend, we ask that you click here to purchase an $11 ticket (per person).

This is always a magical evening and we look forward to sharing it with you!

  2. SLYC | Rocky Walsworth + Taylor Dalton

And, the overall winner of the 2022 Cottage Club Regatta … Stony Lake Yacht Club!!!

A big thank-you goes out to our Race Committee, who put together an excellent series of races. The wind got pretty light on Day 2, but they managed to get in enough races to make for a successful regatta. Race Committee members: Maclain Walsworth, Reece Rishor, Gabe Cellarius, Leif Rishor, Sydney Rankin and Owen Brohman.

It was also quite a thrill to have Tom Ramshaw (two-time Canadian Olympian and Stony Lake local) attend the awards ceremony to say a few words and hand out trophies to the winning sailors.
SLYC takes all three top spots in 420 fleet (L to R: Anna Jacobs, Stella Hong, Abby Wonnacott, Sy Walsworth, Pippa Barrett, Tate Ferron)
Day 1 race action at Cottage Club 2022

Off the water, we had an incredible outpouring of support from our members to make sure all sailors were well fed and had a place to stay. Scott and Kara Walsworth, with help from a small army of volunteers, took on the herculean task of shopping, making, baking, chopping, packaging and distributing homemade lunches for 125 sailors/coaches for both days of racing. Steve and Clare Andersons and their crew of volunteers did an excellent job organizing and flipping hundreds of burgers at the Thursday night BBQ. We also had numerous helpful parents picking up trophies/sweatpants, delivering lunches, drafting waivers, shopping for groceries, driving safety boats, working the registration tables, and on and on.

Also, a very big thank-you to our families who billeted our guest sailors. This meant making breakfasts and dinners as well as shuttling to and from Juniper each day. Finally, we certainly want to thank the team at Carveth’s for allowing all clubs to load, unload and use their facilities and boat ramp. That’s a lot of chaos and we’re lucky to have such a strong partner.

Last but not least, I cannot say enough about the exceptional leadership, organization and raw effort shown by our Head Instructor, Ellie Andersons and our Operations Manager, Ethan Davis. These two worked for weeks to make sure every detail was covered to ensure Cottage Club was a success. I’ve received nothing but positive feedback from sailors, coaches, parents and Board members. Ethan and Ellie (and all SLYC instructors) should be very proud of the work they put into this successful event.

There’s still plenty of action in the remaining weeks of summer. Our race team is sending five boats to CORK in Kingston this week to compete in a very competitive 420 fleet. We still have two weeks remaining for our junior sailing and plenty of spots if you have a child who would like to join the fun. Please register on the SLYC website and send any questions to head.instructor.slyc@gmail.com.

All the best and happy sailing,
Dave Anderson

Opening up court and clinic bookings

As we move into the quieter days of August and less busy times on the tennis courts, please note that we’re now allowing members to participate in multiple clinics in a single day, as long as there’s no one on the waiting list for the clinic. You’re also able to book multiple private lessons in a single week, as long as the slot is available and there’s no one on the waiting list.

And if you’re new to tennis or looking to pick it back up after a long layoff, we have a Beginner clinic for adults starting this week. The clinic will be offered on Tuesday at 10:00 AM and Wednesday-Friday at 11:00 AM.

Kudos

A special shout-out to our Head Pro Peter Szczepanski and our crew of junior pros and volunteers for their unheralded work in getting our courts dry for the 9:00 AM clinics. Think about how many times it has rained overnight this summer, and then you’ll know how many times this squad showed up at 7:00 AM to work on the courts for two-plus hours to get them ready for our enjoyment. Thank you!

Have a great week...

Important Health Update

Between programs and Cottage Club, we’ve had an outbreak of lice on Juniper, with several cases reported this past weekend.

Please check your child’s head daily for lice. For those attending programs this week, be sure to tie your kids’/teens’ hair back and remind everyone to not share hats or other articles of clothing. For more helpful information on lice removal, click here.
