A Question Became A Legacy

Sylvia Powers marks 25 Years of helping Black Women confront Breast Cancer

By Stephanie Ward

Texas Metro News

For Sylvia Powers, the work began with a question she could not ignore: Why were so many Black women being diagnosed with breast cancer and why were so many dying at a higher rate than other races? Twenty-five years later, that question has become a life’s work. Through the Celebrating Life Foundation, Powers has helped connect women with free mammograms, health information, treatment resources and emergency assistance. The organization’s annual Sister to Sister Fitness Festival has grown into a celebration of breast-cancer awareness, survivor hood and community. The 25th Sister to Sister Fitness Festival was held Oct. 3 at the Alan E. Sims Cedar Hill Recreation Center.

The past few months have been a complete overhaul for the Dallas Mavericks. From new front office personnel - including Team President Masai Ussery and CEO Rick Welts - to new head coach Dusty May, the Mavs are ready for a new season, new chemistry, new upward trajectory and more. And that extends to their buildings. Team officials recently gave media a first look at their renovated practice facility which includes upgrades focused on player development, recovery, nutrition, health and body. Khalia Collier, Mavs’ vice-president and chief of staff for basketball operations, said the upgrades were designed to show current and future players that the organization is committed to investing in their success both now and in the future. “I felt like we were a top-10 facility. The goal is to be a top-five and the future goal is to be number one,” she said.

LEAKED AUDIO: Ken Paxton Says “Abbott is Struggling,” Gripes About Texas GOP, Admitting They Will Lose Seats [Rolling Stone]

AUSTIN, TX — Corrupt Ken Paxton’s campaign continues to fall apart as new leaked audio in Rolling Stone catches Paxton trashing the Texas GOP ticket, saying that “Abbott is struggling” while making excuses for his disastrous Senate campaign and admitting Republicans are going to lose seats. Rolling Stone detailed how Paxton made excuses to a room of wealthy D.C. lobbyists that his struggling campaign wasn’t his fault, while griping about the Texas GOP ticket and blaming Dan Patrick for getting rid of straight ticket voting. Paxton predicts that Texas Republicans are “going to probably lose some seats” in the Texas legislature.

Can red-hot Morgan State actually win the MEAC?

From HBCU Sports Report

HBCU Sports https://hbcusports.com/

A check of the MEAC football standings on the eve of conference play finds an unlikely team at the top. Morgan State, yes, those Bears, are 5-1 — putting together their best start since 2009. What once looked like a promising start has become a compelling story about a program gaining confidence and learning how to win close games that they didn’t a year ago. Morgan State’s latest statement came Saturday, when the Bears rallied to defeat Robert Morris 28-27 during homecoming. It was the Bears’ fourth consecutive win and put them.

The 8 Minutes You Need to CHANGE Your LIFE

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

September 15, 1969

A protest began when Willie Black, a 32-year-old math graduate student and head of Wyoming’s Black Student Alliance, learning of the LDS ban on Black male priests, brought a letter titled “We Must Protest” to university administrators. The letter described the race issues of the Mormon church, including the priesthood restriction and other prohibitions, such as barring all women and men of African ancestry from participation in temple rituals. Black’s letter called for all Wyoming football players and students to protest LDS church policies during the scheduled game with BYU three days later on October 18.

DAILY REMEMBRANCE

Somebody woke up to a void today and is trying to find their way.

Somebody won't be able to make things right because of things they didn't get a chance to say.

Somebody is wishing they could turn back time and gaze into a loved one's eyes. Somebody's heart has been broken by death, and all they can do is cry.

Somebody has fallen to their knees with the weight of sadness today.

Somebody is learning that the only way up from here is to stay on their knees and pray.
