Annual Chlorine Purge
The Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will be conducting its yearly chlorine purge from Monday, September 28 through Sunday, October 11, 2026.
For more than 30 years, WASD has partnered annually with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) to schedule the chlorine conversion, which is when the department temporarily changes the method used to disinfect the drinking water supply at its water treatment plants.
Specifically, free chlorine, instead of the standard combined chlorine (chloramine), will be used during the treatment process. Free chlorine is considered an effective method of cleansing water distribution systems.
Crews may be seen flushing water lines throughout the county during this period to ensure that the entire distribution system is included. As a result, there may be intermittent, brief periods of lower-than-normal water pressure or instances of cloudy water. If you notice cloudy water, let the water run for three to five minutes until the water runs clear. This temporary, cosmetic issue does not impact water quality and is necessary to support WASD’s daily commitment to deliver safe, reliable drinking water year-round.
What to expect:
- Slight chlorine taste and/or odor in the water.
- Slight decrease in pressure when hydrants are being flushed in your area.
- No adverse effects to pets (Except for tropical fish).
- Temporary possibility of higher levels of trihalomethanes. (Will not result in any adverse effects).
- Temporary discoloration of the water, as water rushing out of hydrant removes rust and sediment particles from pipes. This water is chlorinated, disinfected, and may be safely consumed.
At times during this two-week period, some customers may notice a chlorine taste or smell. This temporary condition will not cause any adverse health effects. However, dialysis patients may want to contact their doctor, and the owners of tropical fish, managers of restaurants and stores with fish holding tanks, are encouraged to seek advice from aquarium maintenance professionals.

Dispose of Yard Waste Properly, Keep the Bay Healthy!
Help alleviate flooding in your neighborhood! While our Public Works team has been cleaning our stormwater system — you can still do your part to keep storm drains clear of litter and debris to prevent flooding and protect Biscayne Bay.
If you notice a catch basin near your home gathering debris, lend a helping hand. Grab a broom, shovel or a pair of gloves and take a few minutes to remove any debris such as palm fronds, leaves or other yard waste that may block the drain. This simple act can ensure our drainage systems remain operational during a rain event.

FPL Storm Safety Tips
Hurricane season is here and staying prepared helps keep you and your family safe. Florida Power & Light (FPL) works year‑round to strengthen the grid and train crews so they’re ready to respond when severe weather arrives – and we encourage our community to take a few simple steps to stay storm‑ready too:
- Create and share an emergency plan with your household
- Stock up on essentials like batteries, flashlights, a radio, non‑perishable food, water and medications
- Have a qualified professional trim trees near your home before storm season
-

Protect Pets from Extreme Heat
If it's too hot for your bare feet, then it's too hot for your pet's paws. The asphalt can get nearly twice as hot as the air outside.
Here are some ways to keep your furry friends safe:
- Keep your pet hydrated.
- Know signs of overheating.
- Never leave pets in cars.
- Keep paws away from hot pavement.

Don't Be Trashy
#DontBeTrashy! Litter can clog stormwater drains and worsen flooding, harming water quality and marine life. To help, dispose of trash properly and use marked recycling receptacles.
Let's all do our part to keep our beautiful Miami Beach community clean.

Fight the Bite
Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations and wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts when possible – especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.
To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.
- Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
- Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
- Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.

Fertilizer Ban
Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer free.
Visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers for more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period.

Sea Turtle Season
Sea turtle season in Miami Beach began on April 1 and runs through October 31.
Our beach is a crucial nesting habitat for sea turtles. As sea turtle hatchlings make their way from sand to sea, the stark contrast between the darker dunes and the reflection of the moon over the ocean helps them determine where to go.
Artificial lighting near beaches presents a significant hazard by confusing sea turtles and leading them to mistakenly crawl toward the artificial lights instead of heading to the ocean. Turn off the lights to help keep sea turtles safe!
Do not disturb or touch nesting sea turtles or hatchlings. Report any disturbances or lost turtles to Florida Fish and Wildlife at 1.888.404.3922, to Miami-Dade County Government at 305.310.3046 or to Miami Beach PD at 305.673.7900. Let's protect our beach ecosystem together!

Fair Housing Spotlight
In today’s world, disability discrimination is the most common type of illegal housing discrimination documented in the US. It can take many forms like denial of a reasonable accommodation or modification, denial of a service or emotional support animal or failure to provide adequate accessible parking. These are just a few common examples.
Your disability status should not keep you from enjoying every benefit or amenity your dwelling provides. If you or someone you know feels like you are facing discrimination in your housing based on your disability status, please immediately call Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), Inc. at 305.651.4673.
