Your Neighbourwood - Your Community, Reimagined
When you think of your community, what comes to mind? For many of us, it’s the people and places we know and love — neighbours and friends, familiar streets, cherished shops, libraries, and landmarks that make us feel at home.
But what if we expanded that idea of community to include more than just people and buildings? What if we recognized the trees as neighbours, the birds as fellow residents, the rivers, insects, soil, and wildflowers as part of our extended family?
There’s a beautiful word for this broader sense of belonging: Neighbourwood. It invites us to see the living world not as a collection of resources, but as a vibrant community — one we’re deeply connected to. When we begin to see ourselves as part of nature, rather than apart from it, we care for the Earth not out of obligation, but out of love and kinship.
The Anishinaabe have long embraced this perspective. Their word Nda-nwendaaganag meaning “all my relations” — a reminder that every part of the natural world is interconnected, worthy of respect, and deserving of gratitude.
As spring awakens around us and life returns in all its richness, may we walk the land with reverence. Let’s nurture this sense of connection — and help our children grow up with the understanding that their community includes all their relations.

Joining us in a new position, Sarah is now the voice of Camp Kawartha that most of us will hear when we call! In addition to being full of ideas and excitement, Sarah is also a professional photographer who has taken the lovely photos of our staff now on the webpage. Thanks Sarah!

"The opportunities provided to our students at Camp Kawartha these past three days have been more incredible than we could have imagined. Seeing our students who may not necessarily excel in a typical classroom environment thrive at camp was what reminds us all what our roles as teachers are. We are so grateful for all the absolutely incredible staff who supported all of our students, be it through fears, needs, or otherwise. We are so lucky to have such an incredible camp and reassured so close to home, and so thankful to have been able to participate in a trip these students will truly never forget."

Sustainable Building: Tools for a Greener Tomorrow
Our new SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) Program is now available!
Camp Kawartha is partnering with local school boards and GreenUP to offer a hands-on green design and climate solutions program for highschool students. This is a full-day intensive learning experience that enables students to actively engage with real-world solutions to climate change and to learn how their choices can shape a more regenerative future.
Students will tour Camp Kawartha's fleet of award-winning and innovative sustainable buildings, tackle energy challenges and design their own eco-friendly homes. The Kawartha region is a leader in green building design and this course offers students and unique opportunity to explore climate solutions and experience the difference sustainable buildings offer to our health and well-being. This program can be customized to fit SHSM requirements in construction.
To find out more and book, contact Susan Ramey. We are always happy to modify programs to suit older or younger students.

Reconciling with the Land - Creating Spaces where both nature and people can thrive through First Nations Ways of Knowing
Camp Kawartha is proud to announce an inspiring new partnership with GreenUP, the PVNC Catholic School Board, and their Indigenous Advisors. Together, we are transforming three school grounds into vibrant natural spaces that extend classroom learning into the outdoors—while celebrating and strengthening First Nations Ways of Knowing. Camp Kawartha would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their generous support of this project.
At the heart of this initiative is a deep commitment to land-based learning. Students will engage directly with the natural world, guided by the wisdom of Indigenous Knowledge Holders. Through planting, tending, and caring for these revitalized landscapes, they will not only gain hands-on ecological knowledge but also be immersed in Anishinaabemowin—the language of the land—integrated through stories, teachings, and daily experiences in nature.
This collaborative project invites First Nations, students, educators, and community members to co-create spaces that reflect the values of reconciliation, cultural understanding, and environmental stewardship. These naturalized schoolyards will stand as living examples of how together, we can create a future grounded in respect, learning, and shared responsibility for the earth.

Building Community: Mother Trees, Bees and Chickadees
Spring has sprung at the Environment Centre!
It's early days, yet, but you can see the pollinators buzzing around and getting ready for a season of community building! Bumble bees are just coming out of winter hibernation and are looking to start their hives and their important role in helping feed the world and bring new life to so many trees, flowers and other beings.
We're supporting our pollinators by building new gardens (thanks to Marty and the Woodland Wednesday Crew) and shifting old ones (thanks Athen!). Greenwood Church has been partnering with us to care for our apple orchard. And the Rootwood Miyawaki Forest (with additions!) is starting to transform our front meadow into a transitional space that supports all-our-relations (including providing tasty bark snacks for the rabbits and deer!).
School groups are being welcomed back after our ice-storm and we're so excited to be partnering with local school boards to bring students to our Environment Centre! We're offering a new SHSM program and we continue to offer our usual programs for K-12 and beyond. Spending time connecting with nature is one of the most beneficial opportunities we can give our children and youth! Come out and connect with chickadees and bees! Did you know that honey bees are excellent mathematicians? And they're excellent communicators and group decision-makers!
"Our visit to the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre last week was wonderful. The program was perfectly suited to the science subjects we are currently working on (Gr 4 Habitats, Gr. 5 Conservation of Energy). My kids loved the activities, both indoor and out. They were engaging, interactive, hands-on, thought-provoking, and lots of fun. Our instructor had excellent classroom management skills and was very knowledgeable about the subjects involved. The kids had a wonderful time hiking the woods, running in the fields, participating in a scavenger hunt, playing camouflage, and generally having a great time. Thank you!"
The Environment Centre is one of Camp Kawartha's mother trees: we're a place where community connects and enriches everyone's lives! Come join us! Recently we've
- supported local music, such as the St. Pat's Day event organized by Tanah Haney and John Hoffman,
- hosted the Peterborough Youth Substance Use Prevention Initiative (PYSUP) community meeting to create a healthier social environment for youth,
- trained Eco-Mentors,
- supported Trent University student research
- and brought schools and youth to engage, learn and grow with and within a regenerative natural community that values everyone, whether you fly, buzz, creep, crawl, lope or walk on two legs!
There's always lots happening at the Environment Centre! Come have fun with us!

Ice Storm Update
We are all still recovering from the ice storm! Our hearts go out to the many trees who lost limbs and lives. Our best wishes to them for a gentle and vibrant spring and summer that will bring new leaves and new life! Thanks so much for all the shelter and nourishment that you continue to give life!
Camp Kawartha's thanks go out to Hyland Tree Care and to Mike, Athen, Ryan and Jeremy - our maintenance team - for getting us back up and running as soon as we did! Our main site sustained minimal damage (except for our yurt) but was without power for a week. The Nature Areas at the Environment Centre are still being cleared, though we have carved out our safe areas for nature exploration and play! Thanks to Rootwood for their help and hard work! And to all our staff who have helped tidy and rebuild.

Maple News and New Canadians
Tapping trees and building community!
| |
One of the most iconic images of Canadian culture is maple syrup! How better than to welcome our newest community community members than to host them at our Clear Lake site and introduce them to the magic of maple!
In March, we hosted the New Canadian Centre for a maple syrup making event! From listening to sap moving in trees, tasting it and watching it boil in our sugar shack, the New Canadians got to learn all about maple trees and their sweet sap from our knowledgable team of educators, including our fearless Director, Jacob! At the end, everyone was treated to a taste of maple taffy!
| | | | |
A word of thanks....
A word of gratitude to Mike Schmorr and his team of hardworking staff who make the magic of Camp Kawartha possible. You often hear about our educators, but without our dedicated, knowledgable and intrepid maintenance staff we would not be able to offer the joy of maple syrup, the exhilaration of the climbing wall, or the serenity of an evening paddle. Our maintenance team is always working hard behind the scene to make sure that parking lots are ploughed, canoes are fixed, and trees are made safe after ice storms. They also help educate about our green buildings and infrastructure, as you can see Mike doing here! Thanks Mike, Jeremy and Ryan!

The Power of Youth!
Celebrating YLS and Peterborough's New Climate Action Plan!
Congratulations to the Youth Leadership in Sustainability (YLS) program for their activism surrounding the City Council's decision to adopt the new Peterborough Climate Action Plan 2.0 - Pathway to Net Zero 2050 in a 9:2 vote! Also at the meeting were 4RG (For Our Grandchildren) who gave inspiring speeches in support of the Climate Action Plan and who are strong supporters of YLS. Thanks to all activists and those supporting them.
CCAP 2.0 highlights 7 Big Moves in Land Use, Green Buildings, Energy Supply, Sustainable Transportation, Industry, Waste and Forestry and Carbon Capture. Key takeaways from the plan are:
- enhancing the energy efficiency of existing and new buildings;
- continued support of the Transportation Master Plan, Cycling Master Plan and Sustainable Transportation Big Moe to reduce emissions across all transportation modes;
- prioritizing urban design and land-use principles to support the City's goal of being a compact city;
- promoting and developing cleaner energy to reduce grid emissions and increase energy independence through rebates, cooperatives and community and neighbourhood association;
- increasing the urban tree canopy
-
promoting new job opportunities in green sectors such as building and construction (check out our new SHSM), transportation and renewable energy.
