Shares of Oracle Corp surged in the wake of the tech giant reporting its second-quarter fiscal 2022 earnings (period ended November 30, 2021) on December 9, which beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. We include Oracle as an idea in both the Dividend Growth Newsletter and ESG Newsletter portfolios, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the company’s performance of late. Its pivot towards cloud-oriented offerings is playing out quite favorably as Oracle’s growth outlook is now quite bright.

We added Korn Ferry to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio on January 12, 2021. Since then, shares of KFY have surged higher by ~58% as of this writing before taking dividend considerations into account. As of this writing, shares of KFY yield ~0.6% and its income generation upside offers incremental upside to its stellar capital appreciation potential. The top end of our recently-revised fair value estimate sits at $104 per share. Shares of KFY shifted higher in the wake of its latest earnings report as investors continue to warm up to its promising long-term growth outlook, pristine balance sheet, and resilient business model. We liked what we saw in its latest earnings update.

At the start of December 2021, Exxon Mobil Corp laid out its longer term strategy for the 2020s decade. We are going to cover that outlook, the state of the global energy complex, Exxon Mobil’s stellar and improving financial position, and what to expect going forward. Exxon Mobil is a tremendous enterprise and one of our favorite energy names out there.

Valuentum's President of Investment Research Brian Michael Nelson, CFA, explains why there are not really value and growth stocks, why most of the research in quantitative finance is spurious and needs to be redefined on a forward-looking basis, and why enterprise valuation (not the efficient markets hypothesis) should be the organizing principle of finance.

"What if I told you that almost everything you know about finance is wrong? The book Value Trap is the finance and valuation course you didn't get in school," President of Investment Research at Valuentum Brian Nelson says.

"The field needs to be almost entirely redefined in a forward-looking manner. Historical data is useless when it comes to asset pricing. It is future expectations that matter. In the age of Big Data, there may be no better book to guide investors than Value Trap."
What some have said about Standard Deviations:

A very entertaining book about a very serious problem. We deceive ourselves all the time with statistics, and it is time we wised up.

— Robert J. Shiller, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and author of Irrational Exuberance

Statistical reasoning is the most used and abused form of rhetoric in the field of finance. Standard Deviations is an approachable and effective means to arm oneself against the onslaught statistical hyperbole in our modern age. Professor Smith has done us all a tremendous service.

— Bryan White, Managing Director, BlackRock, Inc.
