The Vineyard was Never Ours
There is a peculiar thing that happens when we care for something long enough. We begin by receiving it as a gift, but somewhere along the way, we can start to believe it belongs to us.
Jesus’ parable of the vineyard in Matthew 21 offers a gentle but searching reminder: we are stewards, not owners. The church, our ministries, our traditions, our relationships, even our own lives are gifts entrusted to us for a season. Our calling is to tend them faithfully and to ask a deeper question than simply, “How do we keep this going?” The better question is, “What fruit is growing here?”
Is love growing? Is mercy growing? Are people finding belonging, courage, healing, and hope? Are we becoming more generous and more willing to serve one another?
The vineyard belongs to God. We are given the privilege of tending it for a little while. That truth can be freeing. We do not have to control everything, preserve everything, or carry everything alone. We simply need to remain faithful to the work of love.
May God find good fruit growing among us.
In Christ,
