June 2025

Dear Members,

It’s been an exciting first month as I step into the role of Interim President and CEO. I’m honoured to join such a passionate and hardworking team, and an industry that continues to show incredible strength and momentum.

Rendez-vous Canada was a strong example of that. With Canadian sellers connecting with buyers from around the world, it showcased the innovation, pride, and partnerships that make tourism such a driving force in Canada.

We also held our Annual General Meeting, where we welcomed Minister Rechie Valdez, who spoke to the vital role tourism plays in building strong communities and a strong economy. Congratulations to our newly elected Board of Directors. Their leadership will help shape our work in the year ahead.

Last week, I was proud to represent TIAC at the launch of the Canada Strong Pass. This is a meaningful step to encourage Canadians to explore more of their own country while supporting the local businesses at the heart of our industry.

Thank you again for the warm welcome and for all you do to keep Canadian tourism thriving. I look forward to what we’ll achieve together.

Claude Paul Boivin

Interim President and CEO

TIAC Scores Important Win For Youth Employment

As a timely boost for both youth employment and the Canadian tourism sector, the federal government recently announced a significant expansion of the Canada Summer Jobs program, adding 6,000 new positions to the existing 70,000 opportunities nationwide.

Supporting local and regional tourism development is a top priority for the local communities the program serves. By providing wage subsidies to businesses and not-for-profit organizations, the program not only offers valuable work experience and skill development for young Canadians aged 15 to 30, but also directly addresses the staffing challenges faced by tourism operators, ensuring they have the support needed to thrive during the peak season and contribute to the nation's economic recovery.

This news arrives at a crucial moment, as TIAC continues to advocate for a robust approach to bolstering the tourism workforce to meet heightened demand.

Minister Rechie Valdez Stresses Role of Tourism for Small Businesses at TIAC AGM

During our Annual General Meeting on June 9, we welcomed Minister Rechie Valdez, who spoke about the vital role tourism plays in building strong communities and economies.

In her remarks, Minister Valdez praised the resilience of Canada’s tourism sector, highlighting its vital role in supporting small businesses, creating jobs, and building vibrant communities across the country.

Her presence and continued support serve as a reminder that tourism is not only a cornerstone of our economy but also a powerful connector of people, culture, and place. We thank Minister Valdez for taking the time to join us and for her ongoing commitment to our industry.

Make sure you check out what she shared on LinkedIn.

TIAC Attends Manitoba Legislature

During Rendez-vous Canada 2025 in Winnipeg, TIAC’s Vice-President of Public Affairs, Amy Butcher, and former Chair of the Board of Directors, Nina Kressler, joined representatives from Travel Manitoba, Destination Canada and Tourism Winnipeg at the Manitoba Legislature to hear a statement from the Honourable Nellie Kennedy, Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism.

In her address, Minister Kennedy recognized the significant economic impact of Rendez-vous Canada and underscored the vital role tourism plays in driving Manitoba’s economy and enriching the experiences of both residents and visitors.

Bill C-59: What Canada’s New Greenwashing Law Means for Tourism

What changed, how it affects tourism, and the steps you should consider taking.

Submitted by Angela Nagy, CEO, GreenStep Solutions

In May 2024, the Government of Canada passed Bill C-59, a wide-reaching budget bill with a big impact for businesses promoting their environmental credentials. Especially relevant to the tourism industry are the bill’s new rules targeting greenwashing through amendments to the Competition Act.

C-59, among its various provisions, amends the Competition Act. It specifically addresses greenwashing, defined as unsubstantiated or misleading environmental claims used in the promotion of products or services.
