World Communion Sunday
"Purposed Connection" by Jason Edwards

Jason challenged us to remember our connection with one another as we are surrounded by division. As we gather at the table with no edges, the table of recognition, may we remember the purpose of our connection.

If you wanted to listen again, or for the first time, the service is available on YouTube and Facebook. The links are below. There is also a link to the full worship guide.
THE NEXT OUTDOOR, IN-PERSON WORSHIP
11:00 a.m., OCTOBER 11
BELVOIR WINERY

If we cannot meet outdoors because of the weather, worship will be online, only at 11:00, on Facebook, and not in person. There will not be an 8:30 worship service on YouTube, but the service will be posted to YouTube shortly after the live-stream ends. Attendance at these services is limited for safety concerns. Please reserve your place on The Hub. Outdoor worship cancellations due to weather will be communicated by the email address associated with your registration.

We are also planning for outdoor in-person worship on October 25 at Belvoir Winery if weather permits. Hub reservations will open for this service when the October 11 service reservation period closes.
Catalyst Begins This Sunday
Over the next few weeks, we will learn about our proposed Catalyst Ministry Plan for 2021-2022, which has been shaped around the theme of Renewal. At Second Baptist, our Catalyst Plan is both our budget and our map for mission and ministry. In this three minute video from 2018, hear Jason explain the importance of our Catalyst Plan and how it works.

This pandemic has affected us all in so many ways, including financial. As our Church Treasurer, Angie McElhanney, acknowledged in a letter earlier this year, some of us have been impacted in ways that will make it difficult to stretch any more financially. So many are struggling in so many ways. Others of us have the ability to carry more of the load, by being extra generous now and in the years ahead. As we each pray about how to give, may God help us have a sense of purpose and peace about how we need to contribute to God’s work.

Through Community Groups
FALL COMMUNITY GROUPS
We were created for community, even in the midst of a pandemic! Although we’re living apart, our community groups still provide opportunities for growing together. Through community groups, we have an intentional way to nurture our relationship with God and grow in relationship with one another while finding ways to impact the world together in Jesus’ name. There are plenty of groups that meet year-round and new this year are monthly pop-up groups on special topics. For the time being, our community and Bible study groups are meeting via Zoom.

Check out these upcoming opportunities in October.

Sapphire College Group

Calling all world-class people! Join our own Ed Chasteen for a new community group experience. Each of us is more than our color, our culture, our creed, our age, our gender. Each of us is at our core a World Class Person, able to go anywhere at any time and talk to anyone about anything and feel safe. Group members will be asked to be paired with a person of another faith and/or race to learn about others through a series of online conversations.
Life Events Planning Group

The Financial Stewardship Committee is hosting the final two pop-up sessions of its life events planning series. This group, continued from Spring, will wrap-up with its last two sessions about medical directives on Sunday, October 11 and legacy giving on Sunday, October 18. Both sessions begin at 8:45 a.m. These virtual sessions are open to anyone (even if you didn’t participate in the spring). Make sure to register so we can send you the Zoom link.
When you give to the 2BC Catalyst Ministry Plan, you support our Community Groups and help yourself and others grow in their discipleship as well as find belonging with others. Thank you for giving to Catalyst.

Gratitude Sunday
We Need Your Help!
Because our church family will not be able to gather for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, we are planning two other means of expressing and sharing our sense of gratitude to God.

  1. Throughout the month of November, we will display a Gratitude Ribbon Garden in the Prayer Garden on the East side of the church. You are invited to stop by the church during regular office hours to pick up a large ribbon, use one of the provided marking pens, and write on the ribbon a word or phrase of something(s) for which you are especially grateful this year. You will then take your ribbon to the Garden and tie it on a wooden trellis there or on one of the lower branches of the trees. Your ribbon will remain there throughout November as a testament to your thankfulness to God for the "good and perfect gifts" in your life. Ribbons may be placed beginning Oct. 30.
  2. In addition, each and every church family/household is invited to email in a digital Gratitude Photograph of yourself (yourselves). The photo should be taken in landscape mode. The Subject line on the email should include your name and a word or phrase of what you're thankful for. We will also have a photo stand set up at the Belvoir Winery parking lot for photos before and after our outdoor worship services on Oct. 11 and 25. Volunteers will stitch all the photos together into a video which will be shown during worship on November 15, Gratitude Sunday. The DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING THE PHOTOS IS OCTOBER 26.

Do you have close friends or family members who would participate in these two projects but cannot leave home right now? We will have ribbon packets ready for you to take to them. Or you may let the church office know so volunteers can visit them to take their photos and help them write on their ribbons.

Would you like to be a part of the preparation team for one of these two events? Your help would be appreciated! Please review the list you received by email and contact Karen Rogers if you have any questions.
Regardless of whether you are able to help with preparation, we hope you will take part by placing a ribbon in the garden and submitting a photo.
MISSIONS AND COMMUNITY
We will be collecting non-perishable food items for In As Much Ministry on Sunday October 11 and Sunday October 25. Look for Lisa Kopala and her open trunk in the parking lot. Download the needs list below.
Trunk or Treat
Saturday, October 31
5-7 p.m. in the 2BC parking lot

Trunk or Treat Plan and Needs
This year our Trunk or Treat event has, of course, been modified. All who attend can enjoy the fun yet maintain distance from each other, and children can gather treats that have been handled minimally and carefully.

Consider ways you could help:
  • Purchase Walmart or Sam’s Club gift cards (to be used for candy) and mail/deliver them to 2BC (clearly marked “Trunk or Treat”)
  • Drop off candy you’ve purchased (no nuts please) at the wagons inside the Welcome Center door
  • Volunteer to sit by your vehicle’s trunk (decorated if you wish) and greet children from a distance
  • Volunteer to serve as a host to clean tables, place candy on them, and monitor other safety guidelines

*Contact Angie Fuller if you can volunteer or have any questions. Thank you for your help!
Community Food Distribution
at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church
October 31 from Noon to 2:00 p.m.
Will you join volunteers from 2BC and from Metropolitan as they distribute food from Harvesters or help with voter registration and census completion? Your help is welcome beginning at 11:30 a.m. for set up. Masks are required and gloves are recommended. Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church is located at 2310 E Linwood Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64109.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY
NEW LOCATION for Outdoor Bible Study in OCTOBER
Throughout October the outdoor children’s Bible study (weather permitting) will be on the playground behind Lillian Schumacher Elementary at 425 Claywoods Parkway in Liberty. These sessions are on Sunday mornings for K-5 children (and PreK if parents feel their child is ready). Children are asked to wear masks and bring a chair or towel for seating. Virtual resources continue to be updated weekly in the parent newsletter to supplement the lessons and for those unable to participate outdoors.

I can’t wait to see how creative you can be in our photo scavenger hunt this month! This is designed to be a fun family project, so include as many people in your family as you can in each of the seven photos. Do it on your own time – it’s simple and can be done bit by bit all month.
