Come in out of the cold and enjoy all YPL has to offer - there are programs for all ages. Please check the library's website,

Community-Building at YPL
|
YPL library programs bring friends and neighbors together.
By Dinah Wolff, President
Fall has been a busy time at the Yarmouth Port Library. Our Program Committee, chaired by Duncan Oliver and John Shea, has done a great job bringing in varied events, most recently, a Veterans' Day Concert by the Northside String Band. Over 60 attendees were entertained with patriotic songs and popular wartime music; veterans stood for their particular armed service hymn. Next up is the
Yarmouth Port Christmas Stroll on Sunday, December 3rd, where, as usual, the library will uphold its reputation for the best food stop on Route 6A.
In October, Dona Baratta opened her restaurant, Jack's Outback II, for our Annual Spaghetti Supper. She generously hosts this event every year, donating her restaurant and a delicious dinner for the benefit of the library. Library volunteers bake desserts, wait on tables, and do the dishes (thank you, John Shea). This is always a fun community-building event, involving both patron and Board volunteers. When you want a delicious breakfast or lunch, please remember Jack's Outback II, located at
161 Route 6A here in Yarmouth Port - it's at the end of the driveway next to North Side Nursery School (Out Back...get it?).
For those of you wishing to donate books to the library, we are again accepting donations after a long-awaited clean-out of the building's cellar, where contributions are sorted and stored. Fresh-looking books with a recent publishing date are most likely to sell, so we do appreciate it when donors look over their gifts before bringing them to the library. We have relocated the Book Sale area - look just inside the entrance to the left, behind the spiral staircase.
I write this as Thanksgiving draws near, a time of the year when people reflect on why they're grateful. As I said last year, in addition to my family and friends, I am thankful for the continuing presence of our library here in Yarmouth Port, for its staff, and for all the people who contribute their time and money to keep it going.

Hand Knit Items Needed
|
|
Shout Out to Knitters!
Starting with the
Christmas Stroll on Sunday, December 3, the library's knitters will be selling small hand knit items, such as hats, mittens, socks, and scarves, to benefit the library. Hand knit baby items, cuddly creatures, and tree ornaments are welcomed as well.
We welcome donations from anyone in the community. If you're interested, please bring your hand knit donations to the library
and give them to anyone behind the Circulation Desk.
We ask that you label your items with your name, size, yarn content, and any relevant washing instructions, and we thank you in advance for helping to support YPL.
The Library's Knitting Group meets on 1st and 3rd Mondays at 9:30 AM in the Reading Room, and welcomes knitters of all levels. For information, contact Dinah Wolff at 362-7660 or by email at dg.wolff@gmail.com

Annual Spaghetti Supper A Big Success
|
|
A huge thank you to Dona Baratta, owner of Jack's Outback II,
to the many people who attended and to all the volunteers!
By Duncan Oliver, Co-Chair Program Committee
YPL's
Annual Spaghetti Supper was held at
Jack's Outback II on Sunday, October 15th. Dona Baratta, owner of Jack's Outback II, donated all of the food and the cooking free of charge. This incredible gift by Dona guaranteed a successful evening.
The large crowd enjoyed the many choices which included meat sauce, marinara sauce, white or red clam sauce, or garlic and oil.
Seventeen library bakers provided an incredible assortment of desserts while 14 different waitstaff served the two seatings. The total number of library people volunteering at the dinner itself, from dishwashers to greeters, was 23.
The dinner is a great annual tradition - an event that has gone on for more than ten years with Dona. YPL truly appreciates the generosity and kindness of Jack's, to make this possible.
This year's fundraiser raised more than $1,900.

Children's Room - A fun and busy place!
By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian
The holidays are fast approaching. Are you ready? Or do you already need a break from the insanity? If that's the case - at any point during this hectic season - come on into YPL and relax awhile. The kids can play with the puppet theater or puzzles, blocks, vehicle table and dolls while you relax and peruse the "Favorites" table or browse the latest magazines.
The Children's Room will be a busy place during December vacation. We will have a
Drop-In Lego Day on Wednesday, December 27th from 2 to 6 PM, a visit with the
Therapy Dogs on Thursday, December 28th from 2 to 3 PM, and
Music and Movement with Denya on Friday the 29th at 11 AM.
We now have a small - but enthusiastic - group at our monthly
Storytime which takes place on the second Friday of each month at 11 AM. We are hoping to grow and expand to a weekly format. If you or someone you know would like to join us, please, do. We'd love to have you.
Our monthly Music and Movement with Denya is lively and fun with a great bunch of people from age 1 to 81. Join us on the last Friday of the month at 11 AM in the Children's Room. Remember - all children's and family programs are FREE!
Happy Holidays - Hope to see you soon.

|
By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian
Season's Greetings to you all! We welcome you to enjoy the winter in our cozy reading room, to sit by the fire, and enjoy all we have to offer.
Food for Fines: It's the season of giving. We are again collecting items for the
Yarmouth Food Pantry. You can even pay off your overdue fines with a donation: for each item of non-perishable food you bring to the YPL, we will forgive $1 in fines. You don't have to have a fine to make a donation!
In other news: The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners has updated their website: mass.gov/libraries. It is now more user-friendly. Once you enter the site, you can go to "Research & Articles," where you can access newspapers, magazines, and other databases; you can go to "Digital Collections" and access manuscripts and historical documents, diaries, postcards, and more; you can go to "Books & Ebooks" to find books, music, and DVDs: one-stop shopping for materials and databases.
A reminder about
"Hoopla:" Hoopla is a groundbreaking digital media service offered by your local public library that allows you to borrow movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics, and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, or phone - and even your TV! With no waiting, titles can be streamed immediately, or downloaded to phones or tablets for offline enjoyment later: hoopladigital.com, and choose Yarmouth Town Libraries.
Coming Attractions:
Look for a program on
Coyotes, our local carnivore, on January 5 at 2 PM. This is the final program presented by Long Pasture. supported by a grant from the Mid-Cape Cultural Council. Also we have relocated our
Book Sale area from around the corner to under the balcony. Please take a look at the books we have for sale: good gifts, many from 2017, thanks to our generous patrons who donate new books to support our collection. We thank you all for your continuing support. Happy holidays!

Winter Book Club Selections
|
|
by J. D. Vance
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis -that of white working- class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside.
J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Once Again, It's Membership Time!
|
|
"...we hope you will think about what the Yarmouth Port Library means to you and to the community at large - and what Yarmouth Port would be without it."
By Les Peat, Treasurer
Memberships in the Yarmouth Port Library are an important source of operating funds, providing about 25% of our operating budget and bridging the gap between our costs and other sources of operating revenue. As last year, our goal is $40,000.
For 2018, we ask our patrons to subscribe at what for them will be a sustainable level. If all of our current members maintain or increase the level of their 2017 membership gifts, their contributions, together with those of new members, will allow us to meet our objective. In considering your membership renewal, we hope you will think about what the Yarmouth Port Library means to you and to the community at large-and what Yarmouth Port would be without it. Please be as generous as you can.
If you did not receive a membership form, please
click here. Forms may also be picked up at the library.
Note: Current memberships expire on December 31, 2017, but anyone who has joined after June 30, 2017 is enrolled as a member through December 31, 2018. If you are uncertain about your current membership status, please call Membership Committee Chairman Les Peat at 508-362-7660 to avoid a double payment.
