Today is TISHA B'AV ... the Ninth day of the Hebrew month of AV

KWIc10205745 image

This day in the history of Judaism is the day that both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed.

In current times, this is a day to focus on remembrance and reflection. We might consider the historical and ethical themes of the day and connect these to contemporary issues of suffering and social injustice. Other historical events that are tied to this Hebrew date are: The Inquisition in Spain and Portugal culminating in the expulsion of the Jews from the Iberian Peninsula in 1492, the start of World War I, with Germany declaring war on Russia in the morning and Russia declaring war on Germany (and thus on the Russian Jews) in the afternoon in 1914, the beginning of deportation of Jews to the Treblinka concentration camp from the Warsaw Ghetto, Poland in 1942, and more recently, the deadly bombing of the AMIA Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1994.
