Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
Toledo Jeep Fest returns this weekend. Thousands of people will be downtown to celebrate the iconic Jeep, an automotive giant created right here in Toledo. This is Jeep’s 80th birthday!

Due to challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Jeep Fest was canceled. I invite you all to join the celebration downtown. I am optimistic we will welcome a broad spectrum of attendees this weekend who will help us safely celebrate of the 80th anniversary of the Jeep brand.
Patch and Seal
I was pleased this week to highlight another part of the comprehensive 2021 roads program: our patch and seal.

It’s a cost-effective and efficient procedure for our streets that runs in addition to resurfacing of more than 100 roads this year. This procedure is used on roads with a good foundation and allows us to extend their lifespans for up to a decade.
We continue to resurface streets throughout Toledo – more than 40 miles of residential roads, plus main roads, this year alone. You can find more information on the roads program at toledo.oh.gov/roads.
Paul Alexander Park
Thursday evening, we celebrated our plans for a new natural play space at Paul Alexander Park, which was formerly known as Superior Park.

Councilwoman Vanice Williams and I had the great pleasure of meeting young Terrinae Griswold (pictured with us, wearing the white shirt). Terrinae is a winning artist from Sherman Elementary, and her drawing will help inspire the park’s final design.

The project is a partnership between the city, The Toledo Zoo, Toledo Public Schools, Bowling Green State University, The Arts Commission, and the Friendly Center. It is in the planning stages thanks to a grant from ESPN and LISC Toledo.
Toledo Recovery Plan
We had our second public meeting on the Toledo Recovery Plan this week. It was virtual, and the recording can be watched at this link.

There are four more meetings, all of which will be in-person at different locations. Information on the meetings is posted at toledo.oh.gov/recovery.

We need your input. There is also a survey posted at that link. Please take a moment to fill out the survey and come to one of the meetings. Toledo is receiving $180.9 million from the American Rescue Act, and we sincerely want your ideas on how that money can be invested in our city.
Beyond the Call of Duty, End of Watch Ride to Remember
I would like to end this week on a somber note. It was a humbling experience Tuesday in front of the Toledo Police Department for those of us who came to view the "Beyond the Call of Duty, End of Watch Ride to Remember." It arrived in our city to honor Officer Anthony Dia, who died July 4, 2020. The moving tribute shows the images of officers who died in the line of duty in 2020.

On Jan. 18, 2021, Toledo also tragically lost Officer Brandon Stalker, who was killed in the line of duty. Additionally, Officer Kevin Dumas died on Thanksgiving Day, 2020 and Sgt. John Palmer died in August last year while vacationing with his family.

We think of these officers and their families daily, and they will never be forgotten.
Dorr Street interchange
The new Dorr Street interchange at I-475 is officially completed and set to open. Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, Mayor Kapszukiewicz, State Rep. Paula Hicks-Hudson, and Ohio Department of Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks were among those in attendance Monday at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the project.
Congratulations Oshae Jones
Toledo will celebrate Olympian Oshae Jones, a Toledo native and bronze medal winner in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, with a parade and event at Savage Park, 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 21.

Oshae defeated Maria Hernandez of the Dominican Republic to move on to the semi-final bout on Aug. 4. With that win, she clinched the bronze medal in the Women’s Welterweight Division, becoming the third American woman to medal in the sport of boxing.

Please take a moment to complete a survey on how to strengthen the Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport.

Your responses will help inform us on important questions regarding the airport and its role in serving the community. The survey will be open for only two weeks and should take less than five minutes to complete. We appreciate your time and feedback.
