ADC sounds off in April 9

comment to USDA Data RFI

Federal Register USDA-2026-0034-ERS-2026

ADC opposes this request because it is another example of international climate policy driving what happens on U.S. farms using dairy farmers' valuable data assets and practices. A concern for all dairy operations is that milk buyers are already collecting valuable proprietary data for upstream reporting without disclosing to farmers how it will be used, shared, controlled, and/or monetized. Farmers should be aware of their proprietary data transfers and their value that others in the supply chain could be capturing and not sharing. Examples of producer notifications even mention access to a farm's DairyComp data. Cows will always belch as they recycle natural, existing carbon. These emissions are not new accumulations of GHG inventory. The right methane metric (GWP*) must be used, and the Dairy Farmer's Data Rights and Value must be protected.
