October 2026

Dear friends,

We’re kicking off this week in New Orleans at the annual Opportunity Finance Network Conference, joining our fellow community development financial institutions to celebrate the impact of CDFIs and map out what comes next for our industry.

The Nectar team is participating in a panel on recoverable grants and their untapped potential to boost CDFIs across the country. As policy shifts and current economic conditions create fundraising pressures for all kinds of nonprofits, these conversations about innovative capital sources are especially important.

After all, here are just a few of the benefits of CDFIs in your community:

  • CDFIs make $1 do the work of $8, as we leverage $8 in private sector investment for every $1 in public funding.
  • As borrowers repay their loans to CDFIs, we reinvest the money back into the community through new borrowers.
  • More than 80 percent of CDFI reach goes into underserved communities, bringing resources to the people and places that need it most.

Over the next few months, you’ll see more in-depth stories here about how Nectar, as a CDFI, integrates into the economic ecosystem and partners with foundations, state agencies and other nonprofits to amplify our impact. We’ll be sure to share what we learn at OFN in the meantime — tune into our social media channels to see how the week goes!

With gratitude,

The Nectar Community Investments team

Tips on preparing your home for colder weather

Thanks to everyone who attended our free residential webinars last week, where we discussed Nectar products that can help homeowners complete home improvements ahead of New England’s winter weather.

We had great turnouts at both our English and Spanish sessions. If you missed it, you can always email a member of our residential team at residential@nectar.org with your questions.

October is also Energy Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to assess your home’s energy efficiency and where you might be able to improve it. Check out this resource from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center with different solutions — the Energy Saver Home Loan Program can cover many of these upgrades.

Partnering on climate resilience

Residential Services Director Lissette Paukert recently presented to the Essex County Community Foundation's October Climate Resilience Coalition meeting, helping to kick off the organization’s Energy Transition series

Lissette talked about what a CDFI is, discussed our work throughout the years in promoting equitable energy transition, highlighted challenges to home decarbonization and encouraged trusted sources — like coalition members — to continue spreading the word about climate resilience.

Thank you to ECCF for its support and partnership on this important topic!

Explore decarbonization opportunities for small business owners

Energy Awareness Month isn’t just for homeowners! Small business owners can mark the month as well by exploring decarbonization opportunities, such as the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s free decarbonization and electrification assessments and Nectar’s Clean Economy Fund.

The Fund provides low-cost financing at competitive interest rates for electrification, decarbonization and energy efficiency upgrades. Small business owners can use financing to make improvements to their commercial buildings, or for working capital and equipment financing if they work in the sustainability and green energy fields.

Support Nectar and earn state tax credits

For the second year in a row, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities has allocated $375,000 to Nectar in Community Investment Tax Credits (CITC). Through this program, donations of $1,000 or more to Nectar are eligible for a 50% refundable Massachusetts state tax credit. So, when you give more, you get half back.

Thank you to the Healey-Driscoll Administration and EOHLC for their support of our organization and mission. If you've been thinking about supporting Nectar, this is a unique opportunity to make a difference AND save money on your taxes
