Take A Day Trip to 76 Falls
Seventy-Six Falls is a beautiful waterfall located in Clinton County, Kentucky, along Indian Creek. It may have been named for the nearby community of Seventy-Six, Kentucky. Some believe the name refers to the height of the falls before Lake Cumberland was impounded, but the height is actually about 84 feet. At the lake's normal pool level, the height is 38 feet.
Another theory is that the waterfall was named for the number of small falls, or breaks, on Indian Creek just before the main cascade. However, this is unlikely, as the number of breaks is difficult to determine due to varying water flow and small differences between them.
Several mills once operated on the creek above the falls, which is now the site of a park maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who also manage Lake Cumberland. The meticulously maintained trails, scenic bridges, and breathtaking views leading to Seventy-Six Falls, combined with its cozy picnic area near the falls' edge, make it an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon.
