Back to School Prayer

Holy God,

As the school year begins in New Orleans,

we lift up our children, teachers, and families.

We pray you bless the little ones walking to school with oversized backpacks, bless the anxious teenagers searching for their place in the world, and protect the new young drivers out on our bumpy streets.

We pray you bless the parents releasing their hopes with each morning drop-off, and the teachers who pour out wisdom, patience, and care.

We pray for classrooms filled with curiosity,

for schools that are safe havens of learning and joy, for bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, and counselors, all who make education possible and build our future.

Please guide our students toward kindness, good grades, healthy friendships, and give them courage when lessons feel too heavy.

-Ashley Brown

SCAPC Centennial Mugs

Decorated with our 105th anniversary logo, these lidded Tervis Tumbler mugs are the one and only drinking containers allowed in the sanctuary and chapel, so you can enjoy your coffee during services! Mugs cost $20 each. You can pay by cash or check (made out to “SCAPC” with “mug” in the memo) or via Paypal online at scapc.org/mug. The proceeds benefit SCAPC community and global ministries. Mugs will be available for pick up in Frampton Fellowship Hall on Sundays, August 24, August 31, and September 7 or in the church office Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Congregational Care Pantry Drive

Help us stock our freezer with meals for those in our congregation needing some extra care! Pick up an empty container this Sunday morning, August 24, in Frampton Fellowship Hall. Fill the container with your favorite casserole or soup during the week, then return your filled container to the church freezer on a weekday or the following Sunday. Please clearly label your container with its contents and date. We will have recipes available if you need them.

Zoom With Our Ghana Friends

On Sunday, August 31, during the Sunday School hour, 9:30-10:15 a.m., we will be hosting a conversation with our friends and ministry partners in Senchi Ferry, Ghana. Join us in the Land Building Riverside Room to learn more about the Gethsemane Presbyterian Church community, the Senchi Ferry Learning Center, and the Ghana Scholarship Fund we support through our Global Ministry funds. Learn more about our Ghana ministry at scapc.org/ghana.

Sign Up to Bring Sunday Snacks

The Congregational Life Committee is seeking volunteers to provide refreshments for the congregation each week following the 10:30 a.m. service. Refreshments can consist of small bites, homemade or store-bought cookies, finger sandwiches, muffins, granola bars, etc. for which the church can reimburse up to $50. We ask that refreshments be delivered to Frampton Fellowship Hall, plated and ready to go, by 10 a.m. on Sundays. Sign up at scapc.org/volunteer.

Katrina Memorial Service

A Service of Lament, Thanksgiving, and Healing

We invite you to join us for worship on Friday, August 29 as we remember and lament what was lost and we give thanks to God for the ways we have been cared for and carried through this tragedy. We will honor those who were lost, those who came to help, and those who, with resilience and strength, came back and rebuilt this community.

5:30 p.m. Doors open for quiet prayer and reflection

6:00 p.m. Worship begins

Sharing Our Stories of Remembrance and Hope

Throughout August, we are sharing our stories of remembrance and hope on two bulletin boards in Frampton Fellowship Hall. We invite those who wish to share stories, memories, feelings, photos, tokens, etc. of things, people, and places that were lost as well as those things and memories that brought you hope in the midst of the recovery. You may hand write your stories or submit them via email to Pastor Sarah who will print them off and add them to the display.

Day of Service

Lakeview Presbyterian Church will mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with a day of service on the LPC church campus (5914 Canal Blvd.) on Saturday, August 30 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. In addition to projects improving the church’s building and grounds, there will be a supply drive to assemble hurricane/disaster preparedness kits for the clients of Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services and the public at-large. This event is in partnership with Ask Wonder Explore, the Lakeview Presbyterian Weekday School, PCHAS, and other building partners.
