I’ve served on various non-profit boards in my life. While I feel very good about my time on these boards, it would have been great to have a book like this one. It’s everything I like in a book: concise, readable, and focused on helpful tips, tactics, and high-impact questions. For instance, Dennis’s “50 percent rule,” which urges us to spend half of each meeting discussing why the board matters to the community, is so powerful. It’s been proven over and over that when people get connected to the “why”—that sense of purpose behind what they do—it engages, motivates, and lights a fire under them. Most of us serve on non-profit boards hoping to do some good in the world; this book helps us do that “good” even better.
