Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's request for a financial surveillance solution that provides users with access to data from global commodity markets and exchanges, including spot/cash prices for livestock, lumber, grains, and international metals.

  • U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) — Access to Data for All Commodities - CFTC is seeking a solution that includes all relevant news, price, and other data as specified below for all commodities listed in US commodity exchanges including but not limited to CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) Group (includes NYMEX & COMEX), ICE (Intercontinental Exchange) US, NASDAQ Futures, CFE (CBOE Futures Exchange), CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange), and CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade). In other data news, on June 17th, Public Technology published an article entitled Government rolls out real-time big-data tool to ‘map global supply chains and proactively mitigate risks’. In this story, Sam Trendall describes the UK Government's expansion of its Global Supply Chains Intelligence Programme (GSCIP) with a £331,200 contract to FactSet for real-time big-data analytics. The initiative aims to map global supply chains, proactively mitigating risks and harnessing opportunities for key departments and the NHS by leveraging data from various sources to improve supply chain visibility and resilience.

  • 'This programme tests the value of combining several government and external data sets, along with big data analytics, to map global supply chains,' the department said, in a newly published commercial notice. 'Participants across government will use real-time visibility and insights to better understand their supply chains, recognise and harness opportunities, and proactively mitigate risks.'”

This Nairobi startup is using AI to add data science to African agriculture

“Africa is still the most data-scarce continent,” says Kate Kallot, CEO and founder of Amini, a Nairobi-based environmental data startup founded in 2022 and backed by investors like Salesforce Ventures and the Female Founders Fund. Much of the data is siloed in paper files in government offices or only available through prohibitively expensive satellite providers, she says. And global data sources and models are often less accurate in Africa than elsewhere on the planet. To fill in the gap, Amini is collecting environmental data in Africa through technologies like satellite imagery, drones, and IoT sensors, as well as from existing studies.
