Faculty Wellness in Action: Collaboration That Makes a Difference

The Wellness Program wishes to highlight The Office of Faculty Affairs & Development (OFAD) Wellness Committee*, who has been an invaluable partner in advancing wellbeing across UTHealth Houston, particularly in FY26. During this period, the committee envisioned and championed the institution’s first Wellness Week, helping to market the initiative, host, and lead programming on topics such as resilience, AI and workplace wellbeing, and reflective writing. The Committee’s contributions have extended beyond Wellness Week, as committee members identified an opportunity to add Wellness to the university’s Quick Find digital directory and provided thoughtful recommendations that helped shape the reimagining of the Wellness landing page. We are grateful for their ideas, advocacy, and hands-on partnership in helping create a culture where wellbeing is increasingly visible, accessible, and woven into the UTHealth Houston experience.

What You Need To Do

For the 2026-2027 UT SELECT plan year, employees and their spouses must have a preventive exam on file by February 28, 2027, in order to waive a $50 monthly premium differential. If your preventive exam is on file for a date of service between February 2026 and February 2027, you will not incur the $50 premium differential assessed starting in May 2027. To make it easier to practice self-care, UTHealth Houston provides 8 hours of Preventive leave per year as an incentive for faculty and staff to take advantage of their free preventive care appointments.

Know Your Numbers: Understanding Blood Pressure

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why it's important to know your numbers. Left unmanaged, it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other serious health conditions. A healthy blood pressure reading is less than 120/80.

The good news is that healthy habits such as regular physical activity, nutritious eating, quality sleep, and stress management can help support healthy blood pressure.

Take a few minutes to check your blood pressure and learn your numbers. It's a simple step that can provide valuable insight into your health and help you stay on track for a healthier future.

UT SELECT Benefit: Hello Heart

If you have high blood pressure (130/80 or greater) or take medication to manage your blood pressure, you may be eligible for Hello Heart, a value-added benefit available through UT SELECT members beginning September 1, 2026.

Hello Heart is a digital heart health program designed to help you better understand and manage your cardiovascular health. With the included blood pressure monitor and easy-to-use app, you can track your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and activity levels, view trends over time, and gain insights into how your habits affect your heart health. The app also allows you to generate reports that can be shared with your healthcare provider.
