Falcons Sweep at SDL Center Meet #1

Falcon XC opened league play on September 2, racing on the Jessup University course. Both varsity teams took first place, and freshmen played a major role in every race.

Varsity Boys (3 miles): The Falcons won with 33 points, ahead of Rio Vista (53), Woodland Christian (57) and Highlands (85). Juniors Elijah Bates (17:36) and Gordon Freitas (18:00) went 1-2 overall, giving the team a huge head start. Junior Drew Lindsey (21:22) and sophomore Keane Schwarzbach (21:28) followed as the third and fourth scorers. Freshman Alex Solomon closed out the scoring five with a 22:05. Freshman Levin Mejia (22:31) was right behind as the sixth man, along with junior Cole Cromwell (22:45). Freshman Marshall Freitas (22:54) finished 19th overall, making three freshmen among the Falcons' top nine. Senior Eason Kwok added a 25:30.

Varsity Girls (3 miles): The Falcons won with 25 points, ahead of Golden Sierra (31). Junior Josie Krulick won the race in 19:53, nearly four minutes clear of the field. Sophomore Scarlett Martinez (24:18) took third, and freshman Jillian Silva (25:00) took fourth to score as the third runner. Juniors Layla Heard (27:14) and Diana Zalavarria (27:54) rounded out the scoring five, and sophomore Eleanor Carroll (30:33) finished close behind.

JV (2 miles): William Toms won the boys' race in 15:22, and classmates Andy Lee (17:14) and Frank Villescas (19:19) placed third and fourth, giving the Falcons three of the top four spots. Junior Hazel Campbell placed third in the girls' race in 21:39.

Across the meet, freshmen ran in all four races, scored in both varsity races, and won a JV title, pretty good! After a solid training block,

Falcons Set School Records at the Woodbridge Classic

Falcon Cross Country traveled to Irvine for the 45th Annual Woodbridge Classic — with over 19,000 runners it is the largest invitational in the country — and they came home with two new school records and personal bests up and down the roster.

Junior Josie Krulick broke her own VCS girls' 3-mile school record, finishing 2nd out of 100 runners in the Green Varsity Girls A race in 17:27.1 — 37 seconds faster than her previous mark. That put her in the top 1% of the approximately 9,000 girls racing this year. On the boys' side, junior Elijah Bates broke the VCS boys' 3-mile school record as well, placing 69th out of 225 in 16:38.0, topping the previous record by 18 seconds (also a 33-second personal best). Bates led the Varsity Boys A squad to a 25th-place finish out of 29 teams in the Green division, with junior Gordon Freitas close behind, notching a PR of his own and moving into 3rd place on the VCS all-time 3-mile list.

Nearly every Falcon who raced walked away with a personal best, including PRs of over a minute and a half for sophomore Keane Schwarzbach and junior Drew Lindsey, and a new PR for freshman Jillian Silva in the Frosh Girls race.
